Removing Linux partition...

    Hey all,

Sorry if this seems trivial, I just want to be sure that i don't mess up my hard drive.

I have a Linux partition and I want to remove that, to recover the disk space and give it all to windows.

I have PartitionMagic installed, so I was thinking of just deleting the partition that linux is installed on. But I'm apprenhensive, thinking that i could mess up a few things.

If that's all i have to do then great.

    Thanks for any help :)

Yeah, just use Partition Magic to delete it.

And that will just get rid of linux, without any after effects? there's no other configuration to do then?

Well, delete the partition and reformat it as FAT/NTFS or whatever.
Do you have a bootloader installed on the MBR? If so, just fdisk /mbr it from DOS.

Don't do that if you're running Windows NT/2000/XP. If you're running Windows 9X/Me or one of the NT variants with a FAT/FAT32 partition as your system root, then use BootMagic (presuming you got it with PartitionMagic - if not then download the trial edition), then configure it as the boot loader - then set Windows as the default OS, and disable BootMagic - it will do all the work for you. Test it by re-booting, and there should be no lilo - it should go straight into Windows. Then when you know it's working, get Partition Magic to delete your linux partition and resize your Windows partition to recover the space.

If you have an NTFS formatted partition then it's going to be a bit more complicated - you're going to have to make a FAT partition to install it. See here. After you have installed it, do the above, and delete the FAT partition, not forgetting to set the active partition back to your original OS.

This is the safest way of doing this without messing up your system.

You don't need bootmagic to get rid of a bootloader, what are you talking about?

There's nothing complicated about it, just delete the partition Linux is installed on.
If it is XP/2K there's a fixmbr option in the repair console when you boot off the installation CD to get rid of the bootloader, or else check the link below.
