 Jesus Slydice, what kind of connection do you have?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

    Fascinating.

I rank lower than a 28K modem despite using a 56K, and a fast "all hardware" 56K at that. God bless rural Irish copper phone lines...

Wait till I try it on the college network...

The graph doesn't make ISDN look very attractive.

Stupid thing says it's slower than 64k ISDN!

    How can this be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

We should form a support group...

But it would take far too long for people who need it to find out about it that i guess it wouldnt be worth our while....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,739 ✭✭✭BigEejit

oops ... instead of "the connection from work" it should have read "the connection AT work" ... the connection at home is a lot less impressive (maybe impressive back in 1935) .. 40kbps

The test page loaded in 110.78 seconds, indicating a throughput of 35344bps. or 45,000kps according to my connection icon in the systray...I'm on 56 modem on the end of about 30 feet of cable inside the house (the cable splits from the line inside the front door goes up the wall across the attic, etc! I wonder does that make a difference?)

On modem at home i get:
The test page loaded in 89.659 seconds, indicating a throughput of 43670bps.

The bar shows about half a mm less than 56K using UTVinternet (free)

However with Netsystem (satelite) using modem for upstream its a lot better!

The test page loaded in 27.239 seconds, indicating a throughput of 143743bps

The bar shows me as being slightly above 128K ISDN. Netsystem gives me 350kbs in fact.

Nothing compared to work.. though still not as fast as the first post!!

I opened the link, waited a few seconds, got up,patted my cat idly, went into the kitchen, walked around aimlessly for a bit, got 2 plums (rather juicy they were too), went back into here, stared at loading page, patted cat and yelled at her for giving me cheek, went into another room, turned on Sky News, replied to a text message, emptied two bins and walked back in here several seconds before the page loaded.

    God bless Irish Internet

For those of you on 56k getting really bad results, it could be down to a few things, split lines/badly configured modem settings/network settings.

There are ways of tweaking which will improve latency and ways to improve download rate...unless of course your line is split :)

Search the CS forums, there are countless numbers of threads on the subject.

Also, USB modems tend to give the better download rates in my experience, whereby PCI will give you better latency.
