It sounds like a variation on this scam. You'll probably win €1,000 worth of holiday vouchers, which you will be unable to spend.

    That's spam alright.

I suggest you make a complaint to RegTel, quoting the 1580 number in question as it will be registered to a service providor (who in turn is probably renting it out to the spammers in question).

They'll be able to do something about it.

I just got this, and sent a mail to info@regtel.ie (Regulator of Premium Rate Telecommunications) with the text of the message saying I wanted to make a complaint about it. Dunno if that's what you're supposed to do, but it made me feel better. :)

    God I ****ing hate spam.

    <edit>What they said ^ ;) </edit>

These people who send this sort of crap get the number ranges owned by the 3 mobile phone companies from odtr/comreg and just start to send a message to each number in that range in an incremental fashion. Its kind of like those phone dialler things (which I think are illegal here).

Why do you say we can't do anything about it? We can get that 1584 number shut down for a start, make sure the ****ers don't make a cent out of this scam. There is a code of practice that must be followed for premium services. Send a mail to regtel.

Not always. There's been a disturbing increase in the trend of these mobile numbers being sourced from those Web sites out there that offer the public free SMS.

1580 is a premium rate (Irish) number...along the same lines as 1550, only way more expensive. Ringtone/logo phone lines are 1580 too.

*edit* Found this handy site, costs of premium rate numbers:

Well if they are, my local Fianna Fail TD should be locked up, because (a recording of) the wanker called my house the night before the general election pleading for a vote.
    And, I'm ex directory.

    Two things:
    1. The logo was not going to be free, given you would get charged a premium rate for the text
    2. You may well have 'subscribed', if you've ever used a free Web2SMS site. Always remember; there's no such thing as a free lunch.
If you feel agrieved, then make a complaint to RegTel, as above.

and u probably dont get the logo until you send about 3 or 4 text messages to enter the competition.....

I taught their was an agreement made a while back that SMS ASP's were going to operate on an OPT-IN OPT-OUT basis. Im sure regtel wouldnt be getting the amount of complaints they are currently getting regarding SMS messages if this was the case...
