Lounge boy, it's crap pay but the tips make up for it. Either that or a job wearing rollar-skates in an eightys bar :)

Its gonna be dead hard to find a job after your leaving. I had that problem last summer. Look before your leaving and ask for a break or something. All the other kiddies will be out a month before you

county councils or banks, go now, these jobs are the win. i get 330+ a week over the summer.

If you're a big guy then try security, there's a lot of gigs going on over the summer, and from my experience as a past security type person myself, they're always looking for summer workers. Pay's not bad, and you get to hear some good acts. Worked Witnness last year in Dublin, got to stand between the front pit and Greenday, Foo Fighters, and The Prodigy, and was backstage the whole last day.

That said, you would have to be willing to stay standing in one place for about 16 hours a day...

That what I figured aswell so I plan on looking in Easter if I have time.

Repli-cant remember exact pay, but was back in the days of punts, 5.30 maybe. Had a few friends in dunnes and a few in superquinn, overall Id stick with superquinn.

You can forget that security job :(

Fcuk it, head to the states instead and make some real dosh, not the pittance they call wages over here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭imp

I'd say try HMV. My cousin used to work there and they get pretty good pay and staff discounts afaik. Plus all their stores are in good locations for lunch/things to do after work etc. I certainly might give that one a shot this year...

Sarky, how would one go about obtaining that security job? I might just consider it (if I'm big enough).

    bar work.

depending on where you go, pay starts round E8 p/h for a bar to E10+ for night clubs

if you apply for county council work now, you get €80.00 a day! its part of some gov. scheme to help kids get work

you hafta pick up rubbish around the place, not sure about the hours.. but its 5 days a week, and you get 4 weeks work.

dunnes, well dunnes stores ennis pay €7.42 an hour.
I think it was €7.12, but there was a pay rise couple of months ago.

Wouldnt you get paid more here because of the cost of living?

[Wouldnt you get paid more here because of the cost of living?]

Ahha haa haa haahaa aahaah ahhahaa....

    hmmm....

    No.

So anyway - best summer job. Clan Video in Galway.

Lazy evenings playing computer games and smoking pot out the back with customers etc. Free videos and other perks (can't mention them on here!)

So - pay wasn't the best but the extreme lack of real work in there more than made up for it.

would banks take ppl on for the summer or would you have to tell them ur taking a year out ??would easter be early enough to apply for jobs? and good places to work are call centers and factorys

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭imp

I think its 14 for part-time, and even then you need parental permission. For full-time its 16 and I don't think you need permission.

nothing beats barwork for the summer. and if your young enough you can work in a different bar each summer for 4 or 5 years and after that you can have the bar of your choice for college work, cuz every other bar will be begging for a guy/gal with that much experience.

and even if you've never worked in a bar before, it only takes bout' 2 weeks to get the jist of it and the starting money is usually quite good.

i know, im 19 and im starting on my 7th bar in two weeks time @9.70 p/h ;)

yeah definitely go for the local video shop if you can get it, i done the whole xtravision stint, loads of fun and generally stress free... bonus points if you spend the whole time watching Clerks :)

irishguy.. banks generally don't take ppl on during the summer, none I've worked in anyway.

bar work is pretty good. the work itself isnt bad, but you have to give up your nights especially at the weekends which is a pain. i've been working as a barman since i was 14 (18 now) and i have been getting up to €12 p/h which isnt bad for part time. then tips are an added bonus on top of that.

16 last january. Gunna see if i can get me a job at the local net house. That or working in tower would be the best jobs this summer, for me anyways :p

Chr*st, I worked in Movie Masters in Galway, and had knacks in there from 12 till 12. Didn't get to do anything but barr young jips and their bro's! Couldn't watch a film properly after about 4.00. Nightmare job for me.

The only thing bout the states is the wages are crap and tips brilliant worth way more then your wages:)
16 with certain restrictions (cant work late at night)is the legal working age here,18 to work behind a bar unless its family and to take on a job with no restrictions at all, and 15 with even more restrictions places like euro spar and supervalu seem to have no problems taking on 15 year olds though and theres no lates involved

    You're better off not working.

You'll be working for the rest of your life, so enjoy dossing arund laying football with your mates & trying to impress girlies while you can.

If you really want a bit of cash just try do some extra chores round your house like cutting the grass painting walls etc.. Or maybe get a small paper round job or try cut grass etc.. for your neighbours.

Sangre, Sell your young firm body to japanese busness men. :p. Seriously tho if you can at all you should try to come out to America for the summer. Its ****ing excellent over here. You mightn't come back with loads of money if you enjoy yourself but we're here for the good time not the long time as they say.

What county do you live in?

I worked in the maintenance dep. in Merlin Park Hospital during the last two summers and its the cushyst thing since custard filled beanbags.
i spent more time sleeping during the day at work than i do at college.the breaks are long and if its raining you're inside for the most part of the day.
same with any semi state owned thingy.

that said, the money is minimum wage.....
which is a bit ****ish and the boredom really sets in after a while.

I just got a letter from the galway security firm I worked for last summer. They're looking for a thousand guys, apparently, and pay for noobs is E7.50 an hour. Considering that some gigs can have 16 hour days that's a lot of money for one days work. I came home from Witnness with 200 yoyos, and the pleasure of nearly being gobbed on by Keith Flint and stopping Morcheeba from going backstage!(hey, they didn't have the passes, I was just doing my job......)icon_twisted.gif )

Go find a security company and ask for an application form. if there's an interview involved, just remember that the most important thing in security is to keep the public safe. (they always asked that question in galway.)

Places in town like Topshop, BT2, Arnotts, Brown Thomas or HMV are usually a good laugh and they pay well.

Actually its usually great fun as well, if sometimes a bit repetitive during planting season, and not a very good idea if you burn easily.. bit of crack though, although wasnt too many hot women around our one (damn)
