I'm an NTL cable customer, if I buy a digital tv receiver will I be able to get any of the free digital channels. And will I be able to get the normal channels in digital or do I have to subscribe to NTL's digital package to get any digital stations ?

Under your T & Cs of service you are only allowed connect an STB to NTL's network if it has been supplied by NTL. NTL may take legal action against you or cut off your service if you do otherwise. You may also be breaching provisions of the Posts and Telecommunications Acts.

After getting the dire warning out of the way...

The only FTA channel on the NTL Digital network is TV3. For any other channel, you need to have a valid and authorised NTL Viewing Card.

Unless you paying a Gazzilion quid for HDTV (Which is not even transmitted anyplace in Europe), most "Digital TV" are not much different to plugging a Chorus, NTL or Sky Digital Receiver into the RGB SCART. Some "Digital TV" are not even 100Hz mode TVs. It basically means there is a Digital Tuner.

Unless a TV is LCD, Micro mirrors or Plasma, it at some stage uses SCART like RGB analog signal to drive the "tube"/CRT (or three tubes on rear projection TV).

Since the Analog tuner is such a small part of cost a TV and Ireland hasn't even got a terriestrial Digital system (Other than Cable or Digital MMDS, neither of which will work a "Digital TV"), I wouldn't even fleetingly consider a "Digital" TV. Maybe a LCD or DLP Video Projector though (Higher end models, unlike Plasma or "digital TVs", can connect to HDTV receivers or yet to be released HDTV blue ray DVD players).

How can NTL or P&T tell if a Starview Digital Receiver in use was not supplied by NTL?

Has anyone heard of any action taken by either against users?

    Should I be worried?

    For analogue connection no.

For digital reception, yes. VERY WORRIED. It's actually potentially a criminal offence if they can prove you are able to watch any channel you have not paid for.

And don't open ancient threads. It awakes the Balrogs.
