I don't really know what genre they would be in.

Basically a friend of mine gave me a loan of Menace to Society and Boys in the Hood and i found them to be very gripping.

Can anyone recommend any films of this nature to have a gander at?

    Thanks.

"Dont be a menace to south central park while your drinking your juice in the hood" is a good parody of those films.

    A Must See, tbh.

is it not "Dont be a menace to society while drinking your juice in the hood"?

    "juice " is good.
Seen others but they all same old same old.
Boyz in the hood and Juice would be the ones that stand out.

Not *exactly* in this genre, but kind of a "if you liked these, then you'll love....."

    See "American History X"

    Fantastic Film.

Not exactly in the same vein, but you might like "He Got Game". It's got Denzel in it = good.

Also Milla Jovovich as a whore. :p

Baby Boy, Also Directed by John Singleton of "boys'n' the hood" fame
A thoughtful though slightly flawed look into Black on Black violence and relationships.Great supporting performances from A.J. Johnson and Ving Rhames,
A good debute performance from Tyrese Gibson as jody though as a likeable hustler torn between trying to do the right thing and trying to get by.
snoop dog plays himself...in a prison...with an attitude problem...no change there then.
The conclusion of the sub plot invoving Snoop Dog is thoughly unconvincing and undermines much of the films central message of taking responsibility for ones actions.
The film still raises a multitude of issues in a thought provoking and intelligent manner.

    Reveiw here

Colors, The Ultimate gang banging movie staring Robert Duval and Sean Penn.

Barbershop, staring Ice Cube this is more of a mainstream comedy set in the Hood, still pretty good though tending to border towards slapstick and melodrama at times. The best scenes are those set in the Barbershop and the interplay between a strong ensemble cast.

Fear of a Black Hat, Rap version of "This Is Spinal Tap". Probally features the best Hat Conspiracy Theory of All Time.
Steals heavilly from Tap,which is not a bad thing IMHO.
DVD is being released in the US by Columbia-Tristar Home Video on 8 july 2003.No plans for a european release at present but should be available online. .Check Official Fansite for details

The Whole Spike Lee collection,Do the right thing, shes gotta have it,clockers, jungle fever,

Hollywood Shuffle,a great piece of low budget filmmaking to rank alongside "el mariachi",Satire on the Hollywood Casting Agency and Of Blaxploitation movies of the Shaft era.

    .........
    Also Recomended

    American History X

    Romperstomper

    .........

    Totally Recommended

    Once Were Warriors
At times it is like watching a slow motion train wreck.Dealing with issues of domestic violence, gangs, rape, juvenille detention, suicide, alcoholism and picnics.
Great Performances all round especially from Temuera Morrison (Jango Fett in Attack Of The Clones)as Jakie, the Charismatic yet brutal thug and Rena Owen as beth his independantly minded, longsuffering wife
The final speech by beth turns the whole notion of Warrior on its head.

Do The Right Thing was the one I was trying to think of.
I know where I got the summer bit from too now,
from imdb.com "It's the hottest day of the summer. You can do nothing, you can do something, or you can... !" that's the tagline. Also there's a scene in it that reminded me about the heat.

You could probably add Dangerous Minds to the list.

    La Haine.

    Set in the Paris Projects.
Three friends set out to avenge the death of a friend in police custody with a stolen police revolver.

I've got a silly image in my head of skinny white Irish guys going-
" Yo slap up ma' bitch?!" in a Dub accent after sitting through a few of the above titles! :D

    Sorry, its getting late...:p

Makaveli got it right. It's "Don't Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood." I used to have it on tape, but I can't find it now.

DEAD PRESIDENTS is right up your alley, it's actually the follow up to menace to society..... for an irish connection, with a similar feel to those movies- STATE OF GRACE is an excellent movie with sean penn as a cop going home, undercover, to grass up his old hoodlum buddies, played by gary oldman and ed harris.

    Paid In Full

Directed by Chales Stone III,Solid performances all round in this story of friendship honor and betrayal.

Trys hard to be the next Godfather or scarface, but falls short of such high aspirations.Mainly by a tacked on "feelgood" epilogue,
Which reminded me of an unintentional "Brentism"
Rap Music is the new crack game...mkay

City of God has a sort of similar feel. Best film I've seen in the last 5 years as well.

So the film was postponed for 5 years until they found a suitable replacement?

You might like American Me starring James Edward Olmos. It's about the rise of Mexican gangs in California prisons. Not a lot of street action, mostly prison, but it's still pretty compelling.

i honestly dont know, all i know is the role was written for him to play as

The Warriors - just watch it, its bloody great. D12 ripped off the movie for the video of their song "Fight Music".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,425 ✭✭✭Fidelis

Caesar_Bojangle, the similarities between the movie & the music video are quite obvious. I think that the music video director was paying homage to the movie rather than 'ripping' it off ;)

    Great movie though.

With due respect to Eminem, Swan would kick his ass.
