    Download speed = 1mb - ish, :( i never seem to hit it
    Upload speed = 1mb
    Customers services = Good when you're connected, always willing to help.
    Reliability = Good, down time of about 2 hours total since i was connected last year.

    Eircom dsl

    Price = way too high - 107 pm
    Ping = 40-80
    Download speed = 512k
    Upload speed = 128K - Pretty crap tbh.
    Customers services = Very good, best part of eircom
    Reliability = Very good, hardly any drops and never any downtime.

    NTL Cable

    Price = reasonable (€40 per month including modem rental)
    Ping = 40-80
    Download speed = 512k (really 600k - had a look in the modem's settings :D)
    Upload speed = 128k
    Customers services = awful, terrible, woeful, the only way I could even get the damn thing installed was to write a letter to the MD...
    Reliability = great so far - a couple of slow evenings, but that might be problems with my comp...

    Upload speed = 256K
    Customers services = average, took 14 weeks for install, still havent unbundled the line 2 wks after asking

    ESAT ADSL

    Price = E90 per month(exVAT) way too high, but slightly cheaper than ISDN or 56K for me
    Ping = pings to what? I'm not a gamer. I get pings of 11ms to Esat and 12ms to boards.ie
    Download speed = 512k (never quite reached that, more like 400-500k)
    Upload speed = 256K
    Customers services = average, took 10 weeks for install, but support guys are OK
    Reliability = Great except for one outage in my exchange lasting several hours

    IBB Wireless

    Price = 48€ per month (reasonable), hefty install (400€ or thereabouts)
    Ping = varies, generally between 30-80 depending on server... can be unreliable though, ping spikes etc
    Download speed = 512k
    Upload speed = 512k
    Customers services = not had to use them yet, their sales people and install techs are very friendly tho.
    Reliability = too early to say, the download speeds/ping times can be a bit erratic at times though.

    overall im very happy with it so far, it was very dodgy the first day i had it but it has stablised very well, generally pretty good for games and good download/upload speeds.

    Customers services = Very good, best part of eircom
    Reliability = Very good, hardly any drops and never any downtime.

    ESAT ADSL

    Price = E90 per month(exVAT) too bloody expensive compared to other countries.

    Ping = I'm not a gamer but i pinged boards.ie while downloading at 65 kb/s and gave me between 83 and 28 ms.

    Download speed = 512k (I'm always downloading at 65 kb/s) never less than that.

    Upload speed = 256K (dunno if is working fine or not) But i think i noticed once .. that my D/l speed dropped while uploading. Is that normal?

    Customers services = their technical support is perfect but it took bloody ages to install... i think mostly due to eircom.

    Reliability = in the first week of installation three times down for like half an hour and a whole night ... but since then perfect.

    Regards,

    PS: if there's anyone with Galway ADSL ... wanna meet up?

    Can you expand on that a little bit? What did it cost originally, and what does it cost now?

    It cost roughly €42 in November 2001, and is now just over €50. Reasons for the increases vary from "we had to upgrade the network" (which had zero impact, for me at least) to "everything is going up in price, therefore your cable bill is too."

    EDIT : Both prices include VAT.

    I can't vote or comment on my own WISP but I can post some ping results to these game servers and a speed test. These tests were done from a laptop running through 2 wireless hops, a VPN, a squid cache server and a bandwidth controller.

    C:\Documents and Settings\karl>ping www.quake.ie

    Pinging kali.ign.ie [159.134.244.150] with 32 bytes of data:

    Ping statistics for 159.134.244.150:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 56ms, Maximum = 62ms, Average = 59ms

    C:\Documents and Settings\karl>ping cs.clanradox.com

    Pinging cs.clanradox.com [193.120.211.34] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 193.120.211.34: bytes=32 time=59ms TTL=53

    Ping statistics for 193.120.211.34:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 59ms, Maximum = 85ms, Average = 67ms

    Here's the download test done on www.pcpitstop.com. I did a 4mb download to get a good average.

    Text Block Size 4000 KB
    Download Time 64713 ms (65 seconds)
    Receive Buffer Not available
    Transmission Speed 494 Kb/s

    I hope this helps.

    Hi,

    I have Leap (connected to the RTE Tower) now for a month.
    Here are my experiences:

    The first two weeks my ping times where awful (150 - 800 to uk.servers and www.yahoo.co.uk).Ping very unstable, a lot of spikes. I haven't done any irish-server tests, because I play battlefield 1942 only on uk-Servers.
    I contacted the customer service and they ommited that they have technical problems with the RTE-connection.

    After two weeks my ping times where stable (around 80 - 100 to uk-servers). This is not perfect, but even then Leap said they will do something about it, specially the "strange" routing via NTL should be resolved soon.
    So it is playable and I expect more to come.

    The best thing is: Because I was so unhappy with the ping times, they haven't charged me the first month!!!
    Does your provider do such a good service?

    So here is the summary:
    Price = 99.- + VAT per month. Install 159.- + VAT
    Ping = 80 - 100 (uk-Servers.... irish servers or boards.ie around 150 - 250).
    Download speed = should be 512kBit/s which makes it around 64kByte/second. Actually it is most of the times much higher. My record was (using Flashget as downloadmanager) 180kByte/s which is a 1.4MBit connection and that was the average speed spedd during a 50MB download.
    Upload speed = 512... same as above. Done only some tests and they show a higher rate than 64kByte/s
    Customers services = VERY, VERY Good! (I've stepped them on their nerves I am sure ;-). They are very reliable, friendly, when you drop them a question you can expect a personal response after some minutes! Really impressing in comparison to eircom and UTVIP.
    Reliability = some short downs (1 or 2 minutes) when they do an upgrade of the software.

    jow

    LEAP - a different story!

    I requested that Leap install their basic package for a client of mine at the end of January. It's now April and they still haven't done it! so much for their 10 day install promise! They haven't been very professional about it either!

    Two of the sales guys showed up and assured me that they could see the RTE tower when we finally managed to get them up on the roof. When the installers showed up they said their was no line of sight connection to RTE!!! We've had to wait for them to commission the 3 Rock tower, which is now up but did they ring to tell me or return my calls, well no!

    All the time I'm getting asked by my clients where is their bb connection & I'm having to defend a company that aren't doing anything to help! I was trying to not have to use an overprices former semi-state service or a sell-out to the UK capped service so I've had to use up some of my qudos with my client on this one! Leap don't seem to understand!

    I'd be pushed to recommend them again. but as they say you live and learn.

    I did get a mail from Via-networks which might interest you's all, I presume that they are just reselling the Eircom service but with added value such as, no download limit, 5 pop addresses a domain, a read it for your selves:

    IBB

    Connection = 512kb symmetrical service w/ 8:1 connection ratio.
    Price = €48.something (plus €320 install)
    Customer Service = Friendly
    Reliability = The connection hasn't dropped yet.

    I am currently rather unhappy with the service. I have yet to ONCE see anything resembling what should be my "basic" speed of 64kb (assuming all 8 users are on the pipe at the same time)

    I'm currently downloading stuff from IRISH servers at speeds _JUST_ above 56kb modem speeds. Needless to say I'm wondering how to justify the price I'm paying for the performance I'm getting.

    In IBB's defence, I know they're doing work on the 3-rock transmitter (which I'm connected to), but this seems to be an ongoing saga which has been going on since I was connected - about 4 weeks ago.

    Any more bullsh*t like monday night where I was getting a whooping 3.5kb/s and I'm seriously considering cancelling it.
