    When you say programs.

    Do you mean X-Windows applications?
    If so try changing your desktop from KDE/Gnome to WindowMaker or Blackbox and/or reducing the amount of background kludgeware daemons and process that you aren't and 'will never' use, to free up ram and cpu time.

    I find that X on RedHat is very slow on my box compared to Windows. Not as slow as it used to be, but certainly still slower than Windows. Too much eye candy I suppose.

    Anyone wanna buy me a new box? I've one picked out an' all?

    I might be wrong, but I think windows feels faster because they build a large amount of the GUI stuff into the kernel, which does make for wonderful speed improvements. The drawback seems to be that if the GUI dies, it can bring down the rest of the kernel with it.

    This seems to me to be unnecessary on a windows server system - I mean, if a machine is running a webserver or DB, its got to be wasting resources maintaining a lovely gui when the gui is largely unused. Could anyone estimate the overhead of that?

    try opening up a console and doing

    su
    <type in your root password>
    /sbin/hdparm -d /dev/hda
    /sbin/hdparm -d /dev/hdb
    /sbin/hdparm -d /dev/hdc
    /sbin/hdparm -d /dev/hdd

    This will tell you if dma is turned on for you
    hard drives. If it is not try editing /etc/sysconfig/harddisks
