Prompted form someone else who said they drink a shoulder of vodka before they go out, I'm curious.

With today's ridiculous dirnk prices, how much do you drink before a night on the town?

I personally do the shoulder of vodka thing. Gets you nicely toasted, to the point where you only need 4 more drinks. :)

    What's a shoulder of Vodka?

I don't usually drink before I go out.

    Neither do I.

Somehow I find the idea of getting obfusticated 'in my house' before going out, akin to having an 'adult' go to the off licence for me, and then drinking Bulmers in some random field to avoid the Gardaí.

I don't drink before going out. Just start and finish in the pub :)

to expensive doing it that way ive found johnk.

Usually i have a bit thats good enough to get me tipsy/chatty but going over and above often means you dont get into a lot of places.

    So yeh, nicely locked :)

    (8 tinnies = €20 )

(round of beer for 4 ppl = €16-€18)

i like going out so if i did it your way johnk i would only go out like twice/three in a month so think ill stick to my way :)

Strange really, that you think drinking legally in the comfort of your own home is akin to drinking illegally in a cold, wet field. I'm sure you love handing over a fiver for a pint in the pub then yeah?

normally have about 6 cans before i go out on a thursday night, sometimes 8....

get a crowd in the sitting room and play some ISS on the PS2 or darts or some sort of drinking games and your're sorted, sometimes better than the pub, but then you cant beat the pub atmosphere. :)

    I know I don't...

which is why I go to my local and hand over €3 for a pint.

    - oh and I don't drink -before- I go out either. Sometimes I don't even drink -when- I go out (depends on whether I have to drive or not).

I don't get very drunk on a night out (including club ticket) for less than 40 euro. Most of the time I don't care but the odd time when I'm stressed out cans of linden village in the house are essential.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,265 ✭✭✭MiCr0

it seems to depend on why you drink

do the ppl who drink before they go out, go out to get locked???

i never drink before i go out and i'm happy not to get wasted when i'm out

i drink before i go out because i cant really afford to drink when im out. simple as that.

As previously asked how much is a shoulder of vodka?
As for if I drink before I go out yes.Would often drink about a quarter litre of raw vodka(I`m not a massive fan of drinking till I collapse and get sick the next morning-I just drink so I can talk a bit of sh1te and get off effortlessly with a girl :) )
I dont drink beer often.Just dont particularly like it.

But I seldom drink so much that I am puking all next day and feeling like sh1t.The buzz the night before isnt worth paying for the next day.

So anyway how much is a shoulder?

whats this malarchy about going out and drinking??

dont drink before I go out.

    shoulder of vodka a naggin?

I have a silver flash which is filled with vodka, and I just buy a glass of 7-up in the pub.

It all happened after I paid 15 euro for a double vodka and coke, and I got slightly pissed off about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,770 ✭✭✭Bottle_of_Smoke

Shoulder is 350mls, half a bottle. Don't really drink before I go out but on did on holiday mmmm bottle of french wine only €4....

Probably start pre-drinking next year when I don't have leaving cert looming over me, actually you're right I should be studying!

i remember asking for a shoulder of vodka in some dodgy off licence in limerick once, yer man looked at me like i had two heads and wanted to know if i wanted some bacon or half a pig etc

eventually i pointed to the 'big naggin' as he put it

speaking from experience drtinking before you go out may indicate a problem

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,309 ✭✭✭✭Bard

It's likely to cause you problems as well as you're less likely to get into most places if you're already skuttered drunk.

thats why you dont get completely legless before you go out.. Its good just to have a few beers in you imo, and if you add the prices up it saves you alot of money to do it this way. Maybe if i was on like €30k a year i would be more reluctant to do this but im not and so i'll continue to have a few beers before i head out for the evening.

Besides it depends aswell, if im going out for a few beers after work then yes i will just head straight to the pub, but im more basing this on friday/saturday nights etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,309 ✭✭✭✭Bard

Well in work, we used to have a few cans on a Friday evening in the office (if we'd had an especially good week) - in the web dev company I worked in, and then we'd all wander to a pub together (usually was Cusacks of North Strand Road, the Life bar or the White Horse).

It's disappointing that drink - and more so - GETTING DRUNK - is such an integral part of so many people's nights out. Not everyone needs drink to have fun, you know...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

    Thats very true bard.
But perhaps you could consider that some people have an awful lot of pressure that they can't take and sometimes people resort to alcohol to lossen up everyonce in a while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,210 ✭✭✭Tazz T

I'd usually have a bottle of wine with dinner before I go out on a Saturday night. But then I have a half bottle of wine with my dinner most nights.

BTW, who on earth polled 'a bottle of spirits or more'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,608 ✭✭✭✭sceptre

I tend to go the the pub (when I do) to socialise more than anything else. If I went out deliberately to get legless I'd get a bit concerned about myself. I think I had a bottle of beer before going to the pub some night before Christmas.

Few drinks @ home = grand, few drinks to get tanked up faster when going to the pub later != good, imho.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with Bard.

When I go out, I go out, to socalise, the drink is an ammendum, which is why I wouldn't contemplate getting pissed before going out.

Basically I don't go out to get pissed, but to have a good time, mostly I have a few beers, sometimes I don't.

Never during the weekdays (unless I'm meeting a girl), which means no beers with the lads, unless it's a Friday or a Saturday night.

The girlfriend, well that's a totally different story.
    she has root*.

    *nerd reference alert!

Its just because we (ireland) are such condensed society, is the sole reason why the drink issue is looked upon as a rampant problem. Whereas if you put it in contrast with say a larger country like the u.s or u.k the problem is equally as bad, its just that there are more non drinkers in ratio to drinkers. Thats why our drink problem is much more obvious on the surface.

usually on a thurs or sat night, whichever I am going out. I head over to a mates house with 6-8 beers, or a bottle/naggin of whiskey.

I've never even considered drinking before going out, i only go out when i can afford to ;)

Call me stupid but I thought the whole idea of going out was to have a drink?

I never drink at home (or in a friends house) before hitting the town. I like to start and finish in the pub.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

I never have done it conciously, if I'm at somebodys house, I might have a few drinks, but I don't tend to do that very often.

I usually find it a good idea the start the night with a few shots of something (tequila prefrebly ;) ) You loosen up alot quicker than slowly waiting for the pints to kick in.

Also handy for catching up when you arrive a little late and everyone around you is drunkererer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,305 ✭✭✭irishguy

every thing is so expensive that it has go to the point that i have 2 drink before i go out, so i normally have about 350ml to 500ml of vodca before i go out [depending on how drunk i want to get] but then i would only drink 1 or 2 pints or none at all. And the odd night i would drink 700mls or more but thats not a good idea because i always wake up with bruses and send loads of txt messages to PPL telling them i love them [its great that my manager is so understanding :D ] but hey ur only a student once .But its getting alot worse eveyone i know drinks before they go out and then doesnt spend money in a pub/club its just 2 expensive [esp if ur going out 1 or 2 nights a week]

the odd time if i was going to a gig or a reggae night,i'd have 2 or 3 cans
sick of payin 4:30 in some places for a pint of the black stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

Ive only recently started drinking before i go out. It is far cheaper and to answer someone's question above i dont go out to get drunk. I find however that i become a bit too chatty/merry following my naggin and one or 2 pints when im out so ive decided to cut back a bit for the mean time.

    Meh!

College is too expensive to be paying pub/club prices during an entire night out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,967 ✭✭✭Dun

I really, really hate spending money in clubs and pubs. It's lucky that me and my mates would normally hang out in a friend's flat before going out. Means we get to have as much craic as we want, play the kind of music we like and not worry bout who's getting in the next round. Then we go on out to a club bout 1 - 1.30.

Generally I'd drink a half bottle of vodka or whiskey, and I've never been refused entry into a place. Then I'd have a pint or two when I'm out, and there's my night out, usually never more than €30 - €40 altogether, way in, taxi in and home and drink.

I generally don't like drinking before going out. Well, let me clarify: If its just me and my room-mates I hate it. Boring..I'm really attached to the pub, over-priced rip off experience that it is. Rather be in a pub with a couple of my mates and complete strangers then be at home with just my mates looking at the TV. Of course if you get a good group in and knock the TV off you can have a good time, and I do enjoy a frequent bottle of Erdinger in my home, just don't necessarily go out afterwards.

can anyone tell me where the term "SHOULDER" came from? Heard of "Snipe" "Baby""Naggin" Half Bottle etc but shoulder???
    Lets talk good england peeple!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,110 ✭✭✭Sarn

I've always assumed since it's roughly the same size as your actual shoulderblade.

Don't drink before I go out. Too much of a light weight. Relatively cheap night regardless. Prefer the atmosphere in the pub while everything slowly becomes less distinct.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

I dont ever drink in the house. I normalyl finish work on a friday at 5.30, head to the pub and stay drinking till 5 th next morning. I am indeed loaded and living in London. I didn't drink at home when I was in College either. I drink to socialise, not get hammered, you can't socialise sitting at the computer drinking dutch gold etc.

I probably sound like the shyest person in the world (or maybe I am) but I can't get up and dance unless I'm at least half drunk. I've tried to dance a few times sober and its just not possible. I find myself standing with my feet on the ground doing the boxing moves with my hands and its not in the least enjoyable. I actually think I'm the only single guy and one of the few non-smokers out of about 6 that go out so that can really be a pain.

For that reason I'd have to have at least 6 cans before I go out, another few pints before I'm actually up on the dance floor. If I had the money I'd hit the pub first but I don't.
I drink to socialise, not get hammered, you can't socialise sitting at the computer drinking dutch gold etc.
hehe, I think most of us would drink the cans with a few mates. If people drink cans alone before they go out I'd get yourself checked out. ;)

I've found myself doing the hair of the dog quite often the last few weeks as I've recently moved in with a couple of mates. I stayed in my parents last night so I'm fresh for the first Sunday morning in a while. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,276 ✭✭✭damnyanks

Usually friends just come over or we go over to there place. Have a few drinks there and head out to a club at about 11

It is a lot cheaper. I've moved to the Uk not saying its the same everywhere but binge drinking seems to be a lot worse here. Everynight I go out just about everyone is legless stumbling around shouting. It seems a lot worse then walking through town at 4am

Think the point that someone made earlier about ratio's is very true

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

Yea in England people GO OUT TO GET HAMMERED, on the other side of the argument, if english people say they are only going out for one, then they tend to mean literally one. Then they'll head home, I've found this with alot of my english friends etc, obviously it's no true of all english people.
