They are one of my favourite bands too..
lateralus wasn't as good as aenima imo, their first album opiate wasn't bad either..
their live album.. coachella festival kicks ass too

They are very good and very talented. But they just aren't a live band.

I agree with pornapster, they're really not a band one can appreciate live, perhaps maybe in a very small venue, but when they headlined Ozzfest last year they didn't hold the attention of the crowd at all.

That said, they're musically extremely good, lyrically abstract (which isn't always a good thing!) and Maynard has a gorgeous voice. But I find you have to be in particular mood to listen to them, I haven't listened to them in quite a while..

Tool, not just a clever name there. Pants!!!!

Me thinks they're a bunch of tools!! Hehe geddit? Tools? They're name is Tool? Hmm, hmm? Ah I crack me up.

beg to differ....it's about the visuals live as much as the music. I saw them in the sfx last year and they were incredible, really intense. I refused to go see them at ozzfest cos it just could never work.

  • Moderators, Regional North East Moderators Posts: 12,739 Mod ✭✭✭✭cournioni

That is true, but they just don't get the crowd moving. The crowd are always static at their concerts.

I REALLY DIDN LIKE THEM AT THE OZZFEST! I WAS QUITE DISSAPOINTED REALLY! BAD V BAD AT LIVE MUSIC BUT THERE OKAY OTHERWISE

true, but they're not part of the jump around, moshpit, lets kill every motherf*cker culture.

their shows are meant to be about art

And Ozzfest sure aint about art, that's for sure.

theyre only on the ozzfest tours because Jack Osbourne loves them so much, the little plonker.

anyways i love Tool, they dont really get the crowd goin

i didnt like them that much when ozzfest was here, but if they played again now some of the songs would just make me go mental, which happened to some people in the crowd and there was a bit of movement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,213 ✭✭✭✭therecklessone

I've seen Tool twice, at the SFX and Ozzfest.

The SFX show was probably the best show I have ever attended, they simply blew me away. Ozzfest was good, but was never gonna please the SOAD fans in the crowd, who wanted to wreak havoc for another hour.

I'd love to see them play the Rising Tent at Witnness, the visuals would work so well in the tent.

i have to agree the sfx gig was the best gig ive ever been to.
at ozzfest the whole pit basically disappeared and you couldnt get in without an armband,i was so pissed off it was so empty.
they are my fav band anyway.
    whats wrong with 10min songs?

VERY over-rated, but still a great band in their own right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

Good to see so many people like em as well.

It's kinda hard being the only rebellious teen in my class, If i asked that question there, they'd all think I was taking the p|ss!

    My fave songs are:

    Hooker With A Penis
    Schism
    Lateralus
    Parabola
    The Grudge
    Aenema
    and Third Eye

I find that with TooL, you can listen to their eintire albums and not have an ultimate favourite which you play again again and again, until you get bored of it and go to the next one! All their songs are good (cept for the Skits; Intermission, Dier Van Saten etc)

Well I have seen them live - the visuals they use aer impressive but as a band - ugh

I have also tried to listen to their albums again - ugh

Tool are just one band I could never get into

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

Sure, they may be a bit static on stage, but "ugh" , certainly thats not what you meant to say!

ugh is exactly what I mean to say. It boils down to, I dont like Tool plain and simple

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,213 ✭✭✭✭therecklessone

    Just a thought...

It took me over five years to fully appreciate Tool's best album Aenima. Through all of that I discovered different nuances, and found that songs which suited one particular mood at a given time, often matched a different mood at another time. I think its because the music is more complex than your average metal band (thats not meant as an insult). This may sound crazy, but its as if Tools music is organic, that it manages to grow and develop beyond what the band themselves intend.

p.s. I am not on drugs (well, i am on prescribed pain killers:D )

Overated tripe, although i do like a perfect circle.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 943 ✭✭✭Mewzel

personally i think they are a very good band, but they probably are just a little overrated.
that said i thought they were brilliant live :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

Actually, Stinkfist is one of my top 10 favourite songs ever. Just had to add that! :DD

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 351 ✭✭Darkillion

dont like them myself, though aint heard much, their songs are pretty boring imo

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 467 ✭✭Cheez

ah ya haveto just cop on to them
find ur own place and relate to the lyrics
    then ur grand
    savage band
best in the world right now
so fuk yee suk me mikey

I used to listen to Tool a few years ago when i was still in my metal youth :)
i thought they where a good band then, and still a good band now, i have never seen them live but i have heard some live recordings. had a live of "Third Eye" 13 minutes of pure genius, although, as has been mentioned so many times before on this thread, you have to be in a certain mood to listen to some of the songs.
Overall I like the band :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

Seeing as the topic is starting to die down a bit. I think it's safe to say that overall there's been a positive response. So now I know that I'm not the only TooL fan in the whole of Ireland :)

but whats your favourite tool album?
mine is undertow but everyone i know thinks aenima is the best

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,213 ✭✭✭✭therecklessone

    Aenima. No question.

Their videos are just so amazing, prison sex is by far the best music video EVER. I like their music, but as everyone says, you have to be in a certain mood. Undertow is my favourite tool album too, but they always seem to ruin their albums with stupid intermission/ending noises and samples.

tool are a ****in kick ass band to listen to. but i my self and pornapster would agree that the only way to enjoy these dudes at a concert is to smoke about 3 or 4 joints while there on and just look at thoes screens with all the naked chicks while listening to the band, it ****in blows u away.

Aenima is the best album by far, and my favs on that album r:

    Hooker with a Penis
    Stinkfist
Third Eye (13mins of musical brilliance)
    Aenima

Lateralus was amazin. Its up and down heavy stuff. Even the first track "the grudge" is a m****in trip. Masterpiece.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 898 ✭✭✭Winning Hand

Definately one of my all time favourite bands, lateralus being their best work, followed by aenima. Undertow is just a bit too tricky to get into even though I love it.
For anyone interested in tracking down the 13mins third eye live song it is on the Salival DVD/CD package and is worth getting for that and Pu**** alone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

    How much is that DVD???

I've been looking for it for ages but can't fint it!
