RTE Radio on Sky Digital ?

According to a post from Digimanlimerick in another thread, RTE have said that Radio will start on Sky Digital on 9th April. If this is this case (and I hope it is) it means that RTE at least have some kind of relationship with Sky. Hopefully it will lead to a full RTE service eventually being made available.

Has anyone seen any tests for RTE Radio 1 ? I would have thought that if they're launching April 9th they'd have started testing (God knows the other radio stations seem to test for weeks before launching).

RTÉ have had a kinda relationship with sky for years. Radio 1 is/was available on analog sat. I believe RTÉ will join Dsat sometime. I just hope it's sooner rather than later. Afraid I haven't seen/heard any R1 testing. Try looking @ <!--EZCODE LINK START--><a href="http://www.lyngsat.com/&quot; OLDREF="">www.lyngsat.com</a><!--EZCODE LINK END-->.

As of yet i am still waiting for a reply from the other rte dept she was forwarding my e-mail too.I hope
radio 1 becomes available as it will be a good sign.
But as mentioned nobody has seen any testing yet.Unless
april 9th will be the start of tests, although this was not mentioned.

Anyone get any replies from ch4..They seem very tight lipped. They don't seem to reply to most people.

"RTÉ have had a kinda relationship with sky for years. Radio 1 is/was available on analog sat."

Technically, this relationship was with Astra, not Sky. But now that it's reported that Radio 1 is to join SkyD, then it will have begun forging a relationship with Sky which may work well to getting RTÉ television channels for (Irish) viewers in the future.

RTE Radio 1 IS on skydigital![although limited]It broadcasts for half an hour every weekday[not sure about weekend]at 6:30 in the evening on channel called WRNEuromax[I think its epg 937 or nearby].WRN is a station which has radio from all over the world every half hour.

I'd like to hear Lyric FM in Digital quality.

And on the same subject, it might not be a bad idea for some of Ireland's commercial channels to go on Sky Digital.

Anybody got any favourites they'd like to hear ?

Digimanlimerick: I've sent Channel Four 3 emails but alas no reply. Not very sociable at all!

I don't listen to R1 so it coming to SkyD is nothing but I would like to hear 2FM on SkyD. As for commercial Radio Channels, up here in Donegal, they are few and those few are not my cuppa tea! Maybe TodayFM or Dublin104 (which is advertised a lot on TV)

    Well it hasn't happened.

It's a shame really 'cos it would have bode well for the TV channels to go on Sky too.

So there will be RTÉ Radio 1 on skyD. umm, Yippee?? Would've prefered 2FM. Tis amusing that with so many small radio channels like Core, youthfm, XFM, etc that Atlantic 252 don't join up. The sound would be considerably better and maybe someone might then listen to the channel!

It's interesting that the transponder in question should be carrying Liberty, Magazine Showcase, PIN and The Scene Radio (according to Lyngsat), however none of these channels are now coming in on the manual tuning.

    Wonder what's going on.

Wild speculation - they've cleared that transponder to be the home of all the Irish channels ahead of their May 28th launch on Sky Digital !!

    I know it's a crazy idea, but wouldn't it be cool ?

Also, I agree with irishblimp re Atlantic 252 but I think I heard something about the reason Atlantic isn't on Sky Digital is that they don't have a British broadcasting licence (I presume RTE radio will be just available in Ireland). You'd imagine that if that were true it would be worth their while acquiring a British licence.

"Also, I agree with irishblimp re Atlantic 252 but I think I heard something about the reason Atlantic isn't on Sky Digital is that they don't have a British broadcasting licence"

I think they only need such a licence to broadcast from a transmitter within the UK. On SkyDigital they wouldn't need one. Since they already market to the UK (and seemed not to market to the Republic at all in the far past) they presumably pay royalties for UK listeners.

Which reminds me - is Radio Luxembourg still going on satellite? I remember it closed down on MW some years ago.

I just received the following info from a mailing list for Satellite freqs

"Sky Digital has started PIN, Liberty TV and RTE Radio One on transponder
    12.344 GHz h (SR 27500, FEC 2/3). "

When Radio Luxembourg stopped transmissions on MW, I assumed it had stopped altogether. Also, regarding Atlantic 252, is it true that they broadcast from Ireland (Athlone i think)? Some1 said that they need a license to broadcast in UK if they have transmitters. I assume to broadcast from IRL is cheaper and you have wide scope using LW even if LW is a wee bit dated to say the least with even FM Stereo going outta fashion in favour of the new digital radio platform

Atlantic 252 are licenced to broadcast from Ireland by the Irish Government on 252KHz from a transmitter in Summerhill in County Meath, using approx. 500Kw of power max. The International authorities awarded Ireland with permission to allow a station to transmit on 254Khz (originally) in 1975, but remained unused for over a decade. In late 1985 and in early 1986, Dublin Superpirate Radio Nova conducted some tests on 254KHz with an intention to launch a UK service which was near impossible at the time on MW due to the lack of suitable frequencies on the band. These ended in February 1986, but it was enough for RTE to stimulate interest in its' Long Wave allocation and collaborated with CLT (Luxembourg) with plans to launch a service on it. It was originally going to be called radio tara, but eventually became Atlantic 252 and launched in 1989. Why it has never appeared on the Astra satellite (analogue or digital) has always amazed me considering the better sound quality and coverage available. Nevertheless many would say that Atlantic 252 has the best sound of any AM station there is, this is because the station has a bandwidth of 12KHz as opposed to 9KHz for most AM stations (5KHz for SW)

Radio Luxembourg's MW service on 1440 MW ended in 1991 (I think) and its' English language services on Short Wave and Satellite ended a year later. It felt its' inerests in stations like Atlantic 252 in the UK was better served by them.

But back to the main topic, there is a page on the RTE site saying that it plans to start on the Astra 2B satellite in parallel to its Hotbird outlet, and that its' analogue service on Astra 1B will be closing shortly. So yes, it will eventually happen, and it will not be a question of if, but when.

    Hi everybody,

It's 2.05 am Thursday night/Good Friday morning and RTE Radio 1 is broadcasting loud and clear on 12.344 GHz h (SR 27500, FEC 2/3). They're giving out phone numbers for Ireland, Northern Ireland and Britain for phone calls.

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come (in terms of TV etc,).
