Just received the following e-mail from UTV this afternoon

Obviously UTV is eager to be available on as many mediums as possible, but in order to find out about the possible availability of the channel on Sky, you would need to contact Sky directly, as they would be able to advise you of their intentions.

    So Sky have the answer???

...translates as - we'd love Sky to do the same deal with us as they did with the BBC so that we don't have to pay extra for the Irish rights....

I think they are just passing the buck.

You did not stipulate radio or television but as you contacted RTE's overseas service I take it you are interested in our Radio 1 service on digital. Radio 1 is already available on Hotbird throughout Europe and will be available on Sky Digital from 9 April.

Interesting about the reply you got from RTE regarding their radio service.
Only a month ago I e-mailed RTE radio, and asked them why RTE radio 1 is not on Sky digital when it was available on Sky Annalogue. I was informed by them that RTE had NO plans for Radio 1 to be on Sky. Now you have been told that its April 9th. Interesting. I remember also, that this same response was made to another contribitor to this forum "Gopher" who also posted RTE comments on this site.
RTE constantly say that they are NOT in talks with Sky. Did anyone see the reports in the Sunday Tribune? According to TG4 they are having discussions with Sky, and they only started last friday.

Tanya: Didn't see the tribune - what did it say?

    Mark.

It seems to me that all TV channels say they will not be on Sky even though they may be in talks. BBC said they werent gonna be on but we know what happened there. They'll say nowt until its certain and finalised. Shame tho that they wont let us in on it!!

Here is the reply I got from UTV today...

    Thank you for your e-mail.

UTV is of course eager to be available to as many viewers as possible via as many mediums as possible.

I am happy to be able to tell you that negotiations are currently underway, and we very much hope to be available via Sky by the end of this year.

    thank you again

I must say that the response received by <!--EZCODE BOLD START--> donj73<!--EZCODE BOLD END--> is the most optimistic. It doesnt state anything about the Irish Republic though. Maybe they are only referring to NI, which we know will be on Sky by end of the year either with or without sky's help because ITV leased 3 transponders from SES (Astra). Here's hoping. I will send em some mail now too! <!--EZCODE EMOTICON START :hat --><img src="../www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/pimp.gif" ALT=":hat" OLDREF="http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/pimp.gif"><!--EZCODE EMOTICON END-->

People may want to check out UTV's press release (available at www.utv.ie) on this matter. It doesn't specifically mention the ROI or NI, which leads me to conclude that they are "leaving things open" in this regard.
