you thinking something bigger/better around the same age? or going a bit newer?

Is the 15-20K including a trade in on the golf, or do you have the value of the golf extra?

you thinking something bigger/better around the same age? or going a bit newer?

Just looking for a better car. Not necessarily newer as a 02 BMW would cost a fortune.

15K - 20K total. I would hope to get approx €15,500 for the golf and add another 4K to my price.....

Most appealing so for would be a `00 316i BWM for approx €20K

    OK

    1) I suggest not really going for an Alfa as they are depreciation disasters and are hard to get rid of later on

    2) If you like driving, dont get a 316i as they are too sluggish IMHO and will drive (excuse pun) you mad...go for either a 318i, 318ti or 320i.

    3) How does a Lexus is200i sound to you? Very reliable and getting a '00 has seen most of the topend depreciation gone..

    4) If it was me with 20k to spend, I would go for either the Lexus or if you wanna be MAD, a nice 96' Supra for 13k and add 7k of mods!!!

Ba$tard thanks for the reply. Having read reviews I take your point on the BMW 316i. So I think perhaps a 318 or an Audi A3/4.
I dont want a "rip the road car" nor am I looking for something to mod.

If you not going to mod. Then I would advise a nice 316i coupé. A 99 or early 00.The E36 model.Price is a little les cause model change (E36 to E46).If you Golf was 1.4 then this BMW would have just a nice increase in power but not overwhelming. If you have a mechanic friend or a friend who knows their cars then buy privately as it will be cheaper. Also stay away from the Alfa. Its a justed up tempramental Fiat.Stay Bavarian. You cant beat them for all round perfection

    I bought a 94' 320i Coupe for IR11k 2 years ago. It's a dream car in terms of performance. With 20k to spend I would definitely go for a 99/00 320i, perhaps even consider a Cabriolet 98/99.

You may as well go with the A4 as the A3 is just a Golf with an Audi badge. In saying that if you go for the S3 :)

Any way I dont see the point in going from a Golf to a reliable car when the Golf is one of the most reliable cars out there.

Doing a quick search this is the only A4 I could find in your price range

    http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=41260

Now I think thats a bit to pricey considering its only a 1.6 and has nearly 40K miles on the clock.

    How about a nice passat?

So which of these would be the better car. Also I am upgrading from a 1.4 golf....

    BMW 316i Coupe
    BMW 318i
    Audi A4 - 1.6 or TDi
    Audi A3

It's just a bit.... boring... need a change...

I checked the buy and sell (just for a price check) and I rekon I could get the following....

    `00 A4 for 19K and a `01 for 21K.
    `99 A4 (TDi) for 18K
    `00 BMW 316i for 20K
    `99 BMW 318i for 20k

For the same money you'd get a slightly better Saab which will have a lot better spec than the BMW - but you gotta like Saab design.

I was thinking on the way home in the car...

'Jasus, why didnt I tell the dude a Honda Accord!'

A nice leather-pack '00 VTEC 2.0 ESii with 16's is a lovely, smooth extremely reliable, pokey car with good fuel economy, high service intervals and good stature and will put most other 2.0litres to shame.....

Well, there ya go.....it's said !

No ---- I'm open to suggestions..... I've added a `01 Passax TDi into the mix. May go a bit above the 20K.

28 years old.... 7 years full NCB. Currently paying approx €800 fully comp on a 1.4 golf.

Not too gone on the Saab's (unless its convertable ;) )

A lovely car.... but I can only imagine the insurance

I'm looking at a `99 BWM 318i (new shape) today. It's going for €19,500 which is excellent (I think).

Meegan Motors (Honda Dealer in Castleblaney) had a 00 Navy A4 1.6 with only 19000 miles advertised in the local paper last week for 17500

Seems like a good price if it's still there. I think they used to be on CBG.ie but they dont seem to be listed at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,683 ✭✭✭daveg

    caze,

Thanks a million for the reply. I decided against the 1.6 and have decided to go for the Audi A4 19 Tdi. They seem to be like golddust (99 or a 00). If anyone heres of any for sale will you drop me a PM.

    Thanks.
