Williams unveils 2003 car

The BMW-Williams team revealed its 2003 car, the FW25, to the world’s media at the Circuit de Catalunya, near Barcelona this morning (31st January.)

“The chassis derives little from previous cars and the approach has relied less on iteration, and instead has called for the generation of new ideas,” said Technical Director Patrick Head. “2002 showed us that our chassis was a model of reliability, but that there’s still room for improvement particularly on the aerodynamic front. That’s why the FW25 is a completely new race car.” Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher completed a handful of laps in the afternoon.

Speaking about its new engine, BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen said, “the BMW P83, like its two predecessors, is designed to be the most powerful engine in Formula One. To achieve our aims we have built an even more powerful engine in Munich. Yet again, we were the first to test it on the track and even earlier than last year.”

Team Principal Frank Williams added “We are well prepared and completely determined to get to the top. We have a new, innovative chassis as a product of a completely different way of thinking. And with the P83, BMW has developed another new and more powerful engine. Moreover, we have been very impressed by the performance steps taken by Michelin over the winter.”

Referring to the targets for 2003, BMW Motorsport Director Gerhard Berger said, “We want to pick up from where we left off in terms of our qualifying performance of 2002, especially under the new regulations for a single timed lap. But for the 2003 season we have firmly resolved to claim more wins and podium places. We’re focused ahead while also keeping an eye on the competition in the rear-view mirror.”

The official test programme for the new car kicks off in Barcelona on 1st February.

Will Ferrarie be tested this season? or will f1 plummet further into the rubbish procession?

The most interesting part of the new car is the rear, and for some reason i cannot get any high quality photos of it..fuk!

Its very hard to see and big detail changes in the car but it *looks shorter but seems untidy at the rear too.

Much was made about Williams and Mclaren being too conservative in their designs last year but the rules in F1 mean that radical changes or deign concepts are just not possible.

Already the car has proved pretty slow...
    Times, Barcelona 2/2/03 (circuitcat.com)
    C. da Matta Toyota (M) 56 23 1:17.182
    J. Villeneuve BAR-Honda (B) 39 38 1:18.043
    J. Button BAR-Honda (B) 54 30 1:18.139
    M. Gené Williams-BMW (M) 85 79 1:18.280
    R. Schumacher Williams-BMW (M) 52 17 1:19.800

I know that Ferrari and Williams have a history of sandbagging but this is generally in testing where the cloest rivals are present and there were not this time...2.6 seconds, ouch!

Maybe David will have "his best year yet"...

JPM set a new lap record with the FW25 at Valencia on Monday. His time of 1:10.143 minutes was about 0.3 seconds faster than David Coulthard, who set the lap record in February.
Williams must be doing something right and this bodes well for a good start to the season.
