Cigarette advertising being phased out of motorsport

Cigarrette advertising is slowly being phased out of Formula 1.

Is this a good thing? Or will the lost revenue do serious damage to an already damaged sport?

Personally I believe that stopping the tobacco companies from advertising in formula will damage the sport.

I have to say that it already has affected the sport. With the tobacco companies wanting the space on the cars it would have risen advertising prices, but consequently with the removal of this it means that the demand isn't as strong for these moving billboards. Coupled with a falloff in worldwide advertising revenue obviously meant that teams like jordan would start to suffer more financially.

its great, theres too much money and commercialism invloved. Although, unfortunatly, other companies will probably take their place.

I think it will be a good thing. The problem with formula one is that there is too much money being made by the organisers in tv deals, and too much money being spent by teams on making their cars even more boring. Maybe if all the money goes out of it it may become a more level playing field.

It wont make a significant difference what so ever. F1 is based on a capatalist system and such you will always have the haves and "have nots".

Williams are the best example of this. Switching from Rothmans to Compaq in 2000 and now "HP invent".
Williams have no big money issues and only run a handful of sponsors..like Alliance and some German beer and yet have the capacity to blast up to $100m on their team.

Ferrari are the huge spenders of F1 and its no exaggeration that they race with a blank cheque book..i think they were the 1'st to invest in a 1:1 scale wind tunnel forcing Mclaren to upgrade and making Jag look silly when they unveiled their new tunnel..."its out of date already boys.."

I find it strange that other teams have nt gone looking for other revenue streams of late and are still surviving in tobacco cash...

    Not much will change .imo

F1 will go racing abroad and will no longer be a europe central series and so this kind of advertising will continue and we might even see the FIA allow dual advertising/livery as teams could run specific sponors per region.

they need to do it like the US do it (at least this is what they do in team sports. dunno about motorsports):

at the end of the season the organisers should give the most money to the last placed team and the least money to the winning team.

also, to go hand in hand with that, they need to award points awarded to more positions. I'm glad they've FINALLY made that change this year, but i wish they'd award points to even more positions, to make it much more competitive. i think a eurovision style 12, 10, 8,7,6 etc points system would work well.

Along with a whole arseload of other changes that need to be made, like banning wings ;)
