BBC Sport Online outlines the changes made by Formula One bosses aimed at making the sport a better spectacle.

    1. Qualifying 2. Points 3. Team orders
    4. Testing 5. Tyres

    Qualifying
For the first time in Formula One history, drivers will have only one lap to determine their grid position.

The single hour-long qualifying session on Saturday afternoon has been dumped in favour of two sessions, one on Friday and one on Saturday.

The format of these sessions has also been changed - cars will now go out one at a time for a single run rather than have a maximum of four attempts at any time during the session.

The times set on Friday will not count for the grid, but will define the order in which cars qualify on Saturday afternoons.

The drivers will go out in championship order on Friday, with the series leader first. At the first race of the season, the previous year's championship positions will be used.

The cars will then go out in reverse order on Saturday, with the fastest from Friday going out last, the second fastest second last and so on.

The change could lead to more exciting racing as a driver who makes a mistake on a qualifying lap could line up for the race behind slower cars.

However, it could also play to Michael Schumacher's advantage - the German is the best in F1 at reaching the limit of his car on his first flying lap "from cold".

The rest of the rules can be found at http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/2369307.stm

The rule chnages for qualifying are great. Espically if it rains late on or something you could have the car that finished last firday going out and getting a dry track saturday and then for it to piss rain a manardi could be top f the grid come sunday.

Looks like an earlier rise sometime in march for the Aussie grand prix.

At last! About time there was a motorsport forum on Boards for all us petrolheads. Thank you Bard, DeV and the rest!

As for F1 this year, well, the qually changes should shake the grids up a bit which can't be a bad thing. Though, having said that, I think we'll still see the quick-out-of-the-box guys like M.S. and J.P.M. getting most of the poles. Though there should now be a better chance of the others having a good run if the top guys screw up or if it rains, etc., etc.

As for Jordan, well, I'm a HUGGGGGGGEEEEEE fan of the yellows (though, for the time being, I guess I should say "The Blacks!" Damn, that new car looks sexy in just plain, black, carbon fibre!) and I am really hoping they do better than the last two years. Initial testing led to some minor gremlins but they seem to have ironed them out and, during the week, Fisi was setting some damn good times at the Barcelona test and managed to get quite a few trouble free laps in. Fingers crossed for the coming season then.

Oh, and I have to say that I agree to a certain extent with SouperComputer about F1. It might be considered the pinnacle of motorsport but, in my opinion, the WRC drivers are much more skilled, seeing as they have to be able to drive on so many different surfaces and adapt to changing conditions so quickly. And as for sheer entertainment, well, give me 500 c.c motorcycle racing, whoops..... sorry..... I mean MotoGP (:D) and SBK anyday. Michael Schumacher can kiss Valentino Rossi's ass! :D

Plus the WRC drivers' cars are closer to road cars, so a good rally driver can drive a modded road car at a similar pace.

Hmmm.......Jordan............yeah, I'll be honest, over the last number of years (4-5) I've had high hopes at the beginning of the seasons for them, but then they just end up performing in a mediocre manner. So, this year (above all), I'm not going to expect anything from them.

Yeah f1 pretty much went to the dogs. Disgusting that the supposed "pinnacle" of motorsport has the most uneven playing field. In my opinion, f1 should take a step backwards. Slick tires should definitely come back to increase mechanical grip, all electronic driving aids should be banned and ground effect cars should be allowed.
afaik ground effect isn't as affected by nearby cars, this would improve overtaking.
WRC is growing greatly in popularity now, it will be interesting to see if the changes can halt F1's slide.

allow slicks, ban all driving aids, remove all wings, force all cars to use the same tyres, and decrease the engine size. And stop pricking around with the tracks. That would be excellent. Drivers would need real bravery and skill.

Yep - Bernie doesn't like the fact that the Belgian Government is imposing a ban on tobacco advertising now, rather than in 3 years time when everywhere else in Europe will be.
