Bank of Ireland have a reasonable description of internet browser security here:

    http://www.365online.com/secur.htm?idname=ok1

This only explains the network security, you still should try and assess the organisation behind the site. Look for clues as to the quality of the organisation behind it. E.g.

    Good Signs
    High quality web site.
    Real address and phone number.
    Memberships of Trade Organisations.
    Return/refund policies.
    Reccommendations from your friends/family.

    Bad Signs
    Low quality web site.
    No address/PO Box only address
    No Phone Number
    1 Page web site
Hosted on a free domain (geocities etc)
    Attracts business via SPAM

None of the above will ever be a 100% indication, but it's a fairly good clue. Remember though, you're credit card issuer will usually protect you to some extent for purchases made with their card. Check with your bank for exact details.

also check that the url for credit card info uses the https:// protocol. The "s" stands for secure :)

You'll see it in the address bar.
