Mobile price cut in the UK

'LONDON (Reuters) - Telecoms regulator Oftel has imposed a tough regime of price cuts on calls to cell phones, which some mobile phone firms have vowed to fight.

After more than a year of consultations, Oftel on Wednesday said it would impose the new rules -- which could end up almost halving the price of a call to a mobile phone -- from July 25, 2003.

It said there would be a one-off 15 percent cut in the price of calls to mobile phones, followed by three further inflation- linked annual price reductions of up to 15 percent.'

Now that's a regulator with powers. No doubt we'll continue to get shafted in Ireland.

Just as a follow up to this. From Electric News:

'However, ComReg has said that a reduction in prices similar to the action taken in the UK may not be necessary as all three Irish operators' termination charges are below the European average. "For instance, Vodafone UK has a peak time termination charge of EUR0.20, while Vodafone Ireland has a rate of EUR0.14, which is well below the EU average of EUR0.18," pointed a spokesperson for ComReg.'

vodafone are mounting a legal challenge to this

also they will bring up teh price of handsets to offset the cost of calls

they want to cut cost of landlines to mobile ... since 80% of calls to mobiles are made from landlines
