Ok, so i'm sitting at my computer when this message ( see attachment ) suddenly appears. First of all i want to see if anyone else has gotten one of these. Secondly i want to find out how they are doing it. I've only ever had one other message like this and it was offering diploma's or something like that.

Obviosily leap has a very different definition of affordable than the rest of us ... the probabily borrowed Eircom's dictionary to look it up.

you should disable the Messenger Service in the services control panel

if you have a firewall you should block ports 135 and 445 which is how it gets in to your PC

I am disappointed in Leap, I thought they were above this Messenger Service spam.

Very worrying. If this is how they treat prospective customers, I dread to think what they'd be like if one did sign up..

Muck's suggestions will do the trick - I only disabled the Messenger service myself last week - supposedly this type of spamming is on the up and up.

Moving to Nets/Comms too (not sure if it quite fits in there but probably more so than here)

Doubt somehow that Leap will make any reply to this (or do anything short of playing dumb) but they should be well aware that some people (myself included) will never buy any product from any company that spams.

(edit: scratch that - the BB forum might be a better place while they're discussing some serious thing too:D)

Odds on they are not in great shape financially if they have to spam (advertise) like this. If they were a publically quoted company, I'd short them..:)

Can it be verified that it is definitely Leap?

But who else would be bothered doing it?

It cannot be verified that it is LEAP . The spamming was carried out using a shareware package with customisable headers (I had a look at one just now) and COULD have been carried out by a pimplacious competitor

Only a TCP/IP log bound to the adpter on the targeted machine can tell us for sure...source IP data....

Mindya , port 135 should not be active by default anyway , except where the adapter is using an intranet address in the 192.168 or 10. range , I blame Bill Gates and all his works.

One variant of the Messenger Spam tells you you have a virus, and tries to sell you stuff.

Don't Bonzi turn the messenger service on if it is desabled?

Well, there have been crude attempts at forging IrelandOffline email addresses by someone. People out there get up to all sorts of sh1te.

Has anyone got in touch with Leap about this?

    Ok fair enough.
Perhaps someone should get in touch with them and let them know.

    I'd say it's not them, it's like anti-propaganda ;)
Shame on microsoft for making the messenger service only report the quoted ip name though, the only information it tells us about the sender is forgable... is it too much to ask for it to put their ip number in brackets as well?! :)

Message from LEAP blah blah WWW.LEAP.IE (159.134.20.93 resolved: www.eircom.ie) to localhost on ...

    That'd be better :P
