Weird file on my Linux box..

    Hi all,
The other day i noticed a weird file in my home directory. It's called "-o", which looks like an argument to some command. Anyway what makes this more weird is that the date of the file is Jan 1 1970!! When i cat the file it just throws back garbage characters, about 6 of them. The box has not been online since January 2001 and this file only appeared the other day. Has anyone any ideas what it could be? I will attach the file tommorow as it's at home and i'm not.

sounds like random filesystem corruption to me, shouldn't be anything to worry about. Run fsck or something.
Random files owned by root and with suid permissions are something to worry about alright.

    Yeah fs corruption.

UNIX dates are measured in seconds since midnight 1/1/1970 UTC (GMT).

Might be no harm to run 'file' on it to see if it can recognise the data format.

chkrootkit might come in handy for your self, its a little program that scans for most basic virus, worms, backdoors etc..

    How to

    wget ftp://ftp.pangeia.com.br/pub/seg/pac/chkrootkit.tar.gz

Unpack the tarball using the command
    tar xvzf chkrootkit.tar.gz

cd to the directory it created (in this case chkrootkit-0.38)and compile by typing
    make sense

To use chkrootkit, just type the command
    ./chkrootkit

if anything is invected it will tell you.

    Regards
