Beer Belly

I've put on a bit of a beer belly over the last 6 months or so and I want to lose it!

Overall I am a fairly thin guy!

Does anyone know the least painful way to lose it?

I am a vegetarian and I have already cut back on the booze but the belly still remains!

PS: I don't really have time to go to the gym

Walking. Power walking. or Jogging. Things like that. even 20 minutes a day will do you good.

Perhaps your specific circumstances or location mean that the gym is too far away to get to, but in general terms the excuse "I don't have time for it" is weak and usually a way of saying "I don't want to do any hard work".

Do you have a motivation problem?

    Don't be a pussy.

Such honest anwsers. But if you don't have time to go to the gym then you have to make time. Like Trojan said it looks like you have a motivation problem.

Not something to be to proud of. Just set yourself some goals. It can be hard sumtimes but it is worth it

Dear god I asked for advice not a lecture, I said I don't have to time to go to the gym because I REALLY DO NOT HAVE TIME! I work ****ty hours and very rarely have free time.

Thanks Runfree for your useful advice about the jogging, the rest of you Go to hell! :D

Anytime. Even starting with powerwalking would help to start getting ure fitness level up. then start jogging perhaps.

    Hi goingtokl,

Going on what you say, the beer belly on a thin frame suggests that you will probably shift it fairly easy if you act sooner than later. I wish I acted when I was in your position, and didn't leave it much longer!

Try walking, jogging etc as suggested, but try to make it a daily small session rather that a once a week marathon! Also look at diet, make some small changes - low fat milk, less fried foods, less chocolate, more fruit, etc.

Also: Don't mind us too much on here. Most of us take ourselves very seriously! I know I struggled to get shut of a largish belly.

It took me almost a year before people started really noticing. When they did they were astonished. I was delighted - I had worked really hard to achieve the result. But when people ask how, it almost disappoints them to hear that it was not some little pill, or another relatively effortless drive. The mean side of me sometimes wants to tell them it was. I suppose it is a similar 'pride' that drives the other comments on here!

Cheers Genghis, I really hope I can shift it soon.

I have decided to start walking as much as I can. Yesterday I walked home from work. it took about an hour but I felt really good afterwards, I hope I can keep it up.

I also read something on the BBC Health website that said bad posture can accentuate the belly (I know it's obvious but sometimes I need someone to stress the point!) so in addition to walking doing breathing exercises and even simple things like holding your stomach in for periods of 5 seconds throughout the day can help.

Well anyways I am off to pick up a low fat veggie lunch

    ;)

If you very rarely have free time then you need to sort out other aspects of your life. It's not healthy to work/sleep/work 24/7/365 and you will suffer long term consequences if you keep it up. :)

Of course, if you're not doing quite that, then you do have the time and you are just being a pussy :)

ooh the gym guys are getting sarky oooh! ooh not the gym guys! they're so big and strong!

Yeah as hard as it may be to believe I am on call a lot of the time, I have to complete college projects and study and have various other commitments. oh yes and I also like to get a few hours sleep occasionally. unfortunately all this limits my personal 'free' time.

but then again I could drop everything so I could work out....................

who needs to work or study eh?

thanks to the ppl on this thread who made genuinely helpful comments, especially Genghis and Runfree.

    Cheers guys!

Jesus Christ man you asked for help and we gave you some help mostly people who want to loose weight will go to the Gym or Excercise on there own.

You say that you are on call and dont have much free time what are you doing on this forum if free time is an issue get your self out and do some training and stop moaning about you asked for help and you got it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭Jak

    Best of luck ..

Localised fat loss is a something of a myth. Taking a more vigorous approach to daily activity will likely help you overall, however I wouldn't hold my breath. General lifestyle changes in your diet, walking not driving etc. will help. You need to travel so why not cycle or walk? The weather will be improving in the coming months.

Training is not easy for a lot of people. A lot of people, myself included (though last year time has been easy to find), go to fairly extreme lengths to get their training done. Get up early, get to the gym for 6.45am. No gym, well then just get up early and go for a 30min run at 6.30am. You can get out of bed, you just don't want to enough.

Everybody wants to be fit and healthy, but it all boils down to priorities and how much you want it.

The other posters are just giving you a push, and as this is not the "shoulder to cry on" forum for those who can't find the time - I would support them.

Most people who get into training need to be told that they are ****ing about, wasting their time, not working hard enough etc. (because most of them are). Put the effort in, find a routine, stick to it, and while it will never be easy, you will at least have more energy and drive to stick to it.

    JAK

Ps- While "power walking" is better than nothing, remember the real changes only come with real work.

Guru : I am currently in work, it's the only time I get to post on boards. I am not moaning, I am thankful for the help I received, however I do not appreciate being called a pussy and having my intentions/motivation doubted! If you read my previous posts you will see I am actually exercising on my own.

Jax: I understand your viewpoint. As discussed I have already made diet changes and have been walking instead of bussing it. I am not looking for a "shoulder to cry on", I was looking for advice, which some people were nice enough to give me, others, well, were just insulting.

    I am done here!

    Just a word;

You can always make time for these little projects no matter what you're doing, I have a lot of committments too but if it's important enough like staying in shape etc, time can be made, just drop some plans. If you really want to lose the belly gym it all the way, make time for it or it can get out of hand!

btw it's obvious English is not your first language, so I'd just like to point out that neither the sentence "Don't be a pussy" or the "if ... then ... you are being a pussy" construct are actually calling you a pussy. • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,947 ✭✭✭BLITZ_Molloy

I'm 11st and 6ft. I'm pretty skinny all round which is great but now I'm 20 and growth is finished I'm getting a bit of a belly. I'd say I'm a fairly moderate eater so I think a bit of exercise is the answer. Whats the best way to flatten ones stomach? I'm not talking massive 6-pack or anything, just get rid of the podge.

Trojan, I have to say you're being a right prick to this guy! Why do you say English isn't his first language? Is it because he said 'ppl' and not 'people'?

You could have given him more options than 'GO TO THE GYM!'
The guy is a vegetarian. Did you not perhaps think that maybe he has an intolerance to nuts or wheat or dairy, and bloating may be adding to his beer belly?
LOTS of people do not have time for the gym. Most gyms close at 8 or 9pm and many people work that late every day. The gym is not an option for everyone. Like the original poster said, some people did give him genuine advice, like powerwalking, but i'm afraid 'go to the gym' doesn't really cut it in terms of 'advice'.

Wow, way to drag up an old thread there! Ok, lets see what you're moaning about..

Good for you. I don't really give a damn whether you think I'm a prick or a great guy. Reason being? You've dragged up an irrelavant old post in order to berate me because you've misunderstood the nature of my advice, as did the original poster.

Think what you like, it's not bothering me. I'm not hiding behind a website either - I will calmly and politely explain my opinion to you in person any time you or the original poster makes it to a boards get-together.

I certainly did not say it because of that - this is boards.ie, a site for nerds, eh?

I said it because he had misunderstood my posts in this thread on more than one occasion, wrongly accused me of insulting him, and dissed my completely valid advice. Maybe I could have worded it better, but my original post was genuinely trying to be helpful and I get annoyed, like you and other human beings do, when valid advice is not only not acknowledged, but dissed.

Did it escape your attention that the first 2 respondants, regular fitness posters, both immediately agreed with my post?

I didn't give him the advice of "GO TO THE GYM!". I suggested that his excuse of "no time" was weak. This is a very common excuse amongst people who are trying to start some form of program. It is NOT VALID.

It doesn't matter a damn whether he's lactose intolerant or allergic to moondust. The excuse "no time" is still weak. Everyone can fit in some form of exercise into their current daily routine unless they live in the Internatonal Space Station.

Excellent. Now eth0_, I'd like you to do a search on this page in Netscape or IE, find the place where I say that OR EVEN SIMILAR and quote it to me. I will immediately apologise to both you and mr original poster for any offense caused and buy you both drinks (vodka with diet coke ;)) at the next beers.

Now before you get offended and reply huffily, read this. It's the article I mentioned and linked above, from logics site originally (it's no longer there). Training requires a lot of effort and people find it hard to get started. A lot of people need a kick up the ass. Some of us give it to them.

I notice you never complained about me saying "Don't be a pussy" to him - I'll answer that just to save you replying again - I said it not to insult him or to call him one, I said it as an order: "You are not making time, go make that time for exercise and make the effort to do it! Do it now!". Only I was slighty more terse :)

Yes, my tertiary responses were unreasonable, but hey, I gave valid advice and the guy was rude to me. Don't do that.

Now I don't have time to spend 20 mins typing a response like this to everyone, and I won't be doing it again. If you think I'm still unreasonable, post away to your hearts content but don't expect another explanation - I don't give a damn.

Original poster: any update on your progress?

    Best regards,
    Al.

You were in the right Trojan. There really is no point pussy footing around with fitness and health issues. That crap can lead to the person being falsely secure in thinking that the weight will disappear.

I know myself. Getting too comfortable into a lazy routine is dangerous.

I have used the excuse projects and work to do but it in reality there was time.

If i was him i'd rather use the money for gym clothes/equpment and a membership then have a tube inserted into me.

    quick routine.

10 min of situps...say before you have a shower. I'm sure you have time for that :)

Best way to do it, I find, is to lie on the floor, knees bent.
Breathe all the way out and suck in your stomach. Put your hands behind your neck and making sure that your neck is inline with your spine, keep your eyes on the ceiling, and lift your shoulders off the ground.
If it's really an out of shape beer belly, it should hurt after a few of these. Try to push yourself to 20 situps. Don't rush it, so if you're out of breath just pause, take a quick breath, exhale all the way, and continue.

After 20, relax for a few seconds, and repeat it again....and again.

Make sure your abs are in pain, or you're not doing it right.

Not many people suck their stomach in when they do situps, and what happens is that they develop a solid layer of muscle, but still maintain a belly.
Breathing all the way out and sucking in also makes situps much harder and more painful, I personally find it to be a brilliant method. Give it a try. Takes discipline to do it everyday.

It's also better to do it when your heartrate is up, so if you jog home from work, that's probably the best time to do it, and then shower the sweat off afterwards.

Hope this helps, just 10 mins a day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,584 ✭✭✭✭tunney

Situps will not get rid of a beer belly, they will not do a thing for it. The person may have strong abs but still have a beer belly

Sucking in when doing sit-ups does not increase the amount of fat burned, people will still have a layer of fat over their abs.

I'm very curious as to how an increase HR affects sit-ups?

*boggles* at people who (don't enjoy) the gym.

Just decide that 'today' (whatever about tomorrow) you will go and do some training.

Just concentrate on getting the bag packed... and then getting out the door... and then going to the gym.

If you think of the thing in terms of working the bod really hard for 2 hours straight... it'll never get done, if you can get the choice down to something simple like, getting the self out the door to hit, the place.... it *should* be much easier.... moreover.... I still can't think of a single time I went to the gym, where I left the place and didn't feel absolutely brilliant ....

I should have got into it ... *years* ago.

    *boggles at self*

Dunno about that typedef, it took me a good 9 months to go from derding the gym to loving it. It does take a while

I don't like gyms because I usually find they are full of poser cúnts in tank tops strutting around the place, being loud and obnoxious and constantly admiring themselves in the mirrors. I don't want to be around people like that.

However, I love doing weights at home using my own equipment. Like Typedef I feel great after a session and regret that I didn't start doing the weights years ago.

It's almost an addiction at this stage. I don't think I could go back to my previous lifestyle (sedentary with a diet of mainly junk food) now, even if I wanted to.

Yeah, its a very good point. No matter how you feel before going to the gym you invariably leave feeling good. I love going, have done since I joined, and some of the best nights I've had were the ones when I was most tired, the ones where I almost said 'sod it, I'll stay at home / go straight home and skip it tonight'.

    Ah, sarcasm, how clever

Anyhow, the "big guys" and serious athletes that you find in gyms are generally not the ones posing and strutting about. They go to the gym to train, mind their own busness and just get on with it.

Unlike those wannabe hard-man w*nkers in tank tops that I have encountered in every gym I've ever been in.

A bit like stereotyping people who go to the gym as "posing ****s".
I never stereotyped people who go to the gym as posing ****s. If I wanted to make this stereotype, I would have said "people who go to gyms are posing ****s" There's quite a difference between this statement and what I actually said which was basically that "gyms tend to be full of posing ****s" Not my problem if you don't understand the difference.

I also qualified this by stating that it is what I have found and that this is the reason why I avoid gyms and train at home. In other words, I am just stating my personal experience with gyms and my preference for exercising at home.

The gyms that I have been in have been like this. Perhaps I was unlucky. Perhaps this does not apply to all gyms.
