Mobile Number Portability - effective from by July

ComReg have directed mobile operators to ensure that mobile number portability will be effective from 25 July.
This means that Vodafone customers may have 086 numbers while O2 customers may retain 087 numbers and so on.

Im not so sure i like this change. Seeing as its such a ripoff for crossnetwork calls, its always handy know know what network the person your calling is on. The prefix convention was just that, a convention.

Anyway, this has nothing to do with ioffl. Here ye go Mr Kehoe :)

Heh, thanks. ;) Well I like it, as it means I could change to O2 (which I've been considering for a good while) and retain my existing number.

I can see the obvious advantage when a user switches networks. However I can also se the obvious disadvantage when users don't.

It'll be like travelling on a UK train. Phone rings, chap answers. First words out of his mouth after "Hello"? "Yeah, I'm on Vodafone, you're grand"

Thumbs down from me - it'll affect far more than the people who switch networks.

im going to echo the point that dustaz made and give it a thumbs down also. Either that or made cross network calls a hell of a lot cheaper.

Vodafones new "Talk & Text" tarrifs seem to cover all networks (for your inclusive minutes & texts).

Well maybe since people will no longer stay with a network as there's no hassle involed with getting a new number, the prices will start to come down.

There'll be more reason for good prices...

    (i'm an optimist ):)

I for one will welcome it after the crap I have had to put up with from Vodafone.

Having said that, what's to say the same thing won't happen when I switch to O2 or Meteor?

At least I can get a miniscule amount of satisfaction from switching, not that it would do them any harm.
