Does anyone know how (or can anyone) get up from the ground by rolling onto their shoulders and spinning their legs in the air?

Don't see how this has to do with self defense. more of a fitness or After Hours post.

I'll leave you off this time as long there is no messing.

Is that the one where you are lying on your back, you pull your knees back and forward jump onto your feet? If so that's dead cool but I don't know how to do it. I reckon go to Russian dancing courses.

Not sure if there are any good Wu Shu schools in Ireland but if there are they'd be your best bet. I'd say alot of it is to do with the momentum you get into your legs as they begin spinning. As your lying down at the time you start the spin you'll probably need strong stomach muscles to achieve this but that's largely guess work on my part.

A good break dancer would probably be able to teach you something similar.

What in hell are you doing on the ground?
Wrestlers go to the mat but they don't have four of the BG mates kicking feck outta them!
Like in Aikido , if you go down try to roll out and up.Failing that hedgehog up and roll around to avoid the worst of the kicking and hope they get tired!

That isnt quite what i mean. My mate was showing me how to do the one that you are talking about, but the room we were training in had a wooden floor and no rubber mats, so i didn't try very hard.

I can do that (the one Gordon mentioned - given that I can do that I've never tried the rolling/spinning on shoulders method).

I can also move from a kneeling position to a sitting position without touching the ground (except on landing obviously).

And I've no idea how I actually do either of the things - it's just something I can do

I suspect Earthhorse is right on how it's done though - I push from my neck when I'm jumping up from the floor (haven't done it recently, though you'd be surprised how many women it impressed) so the momentum on spinning legs and jumping must at least half come from below the waist.

(years ago I was able to flip over from a standing position and land on my feet but I wouldn't have the balls to try it now (mostly because I'm a lot flexible than I used be - can't even touch the ground with my fingers while keeping my knees straight any more, back in my running days I could put my palms on the floor)

DeadBankClerk, on www.breakdance.com look for what's called a "Barrel Mill", that's basically rolling around on the ground on your shoulders, followed by a "Flare" (spinning your legs).
There are other ways to get up from the floor, too, some quite ingenious and very impressive. Check out the videos in the gallery.

Actually, from reading your Capoeira thread, there are a lot of similarities between it and breakin'.

Streets Ahead have adult breakdance classes where you could learn that.

Can someone link me to that capoeira thread please?

Edit: If you're doing capoeira, ask thine Mestre. They're often a wealth of knowledge on far ranging topics.

    DeadBankClerk,

If you want to look at a great example of how to do the shoulder roll get up check out TheMatrix vol1. Just when Neo is fighting Morpheus in the training thing and is on the ground, the camers goes behind Neo and he does one. Have a look and it will show you how to start it with your feet/legs.

    Hope it helps.

No I am not a matrix nut, I just remembered it and had a quick look at the dvd.

Don't forget to use those hidden ropes when practicing it ;)

    Okay,

So since you asked on the internet I'll give you the internet answer.

If your right legged, lie on your back, legs about shoulder distance apart, kick your right leg in an arch past your left leg (your right leg moves parallel to the ground) as your leg gets to be purpendicular to your body your left leg follows it, passes it and then moves perpindicular to the ground and shoots up, as your leg is dragging your body (and your hips are pushing) you switch your hips and shoulders so you are facing the ground. Your feet should be the first thing to hit the ground. Then stand.

Now, considering you watched your friends actually do it I really am sceptical that you'll learn it from this thread.

    Peace
