Everyone knows all the great guitarists, but whos your favourite bassist, these guys rarely get a mention so might aswell give them a thread :)

Mines Les Claypool from Primus, feck can that man play! He has some really mad intro's to some of their songs.

Id put John Wyeung (spelling?) from Dream Theatre in at second, who is also a great bassist.

    .

I'd have to agree with you there, he's amazing.
Otherwise, although not rock\metal I'd go for ex-Jamiroquai bass player Stuart Zender.

who i think is superb, id say justin chancellor from tool.he really provides a great foundation for the songs to be built around.

i also really liked what krist did in nirvana.

    basic is best!!

mine would tave to be rex brown(pantera, down) and clif burton the original bass player from metallicarex.gifcliffani.gif

Well heres my top five anyway...

    1. Les Claypool (Primus)
    2. John Myung (Dream Theater)
    3. Justin Chancellor (Tool)
    4. Cliff Burton (ex-Metallica)
    5. Rex Brown (Pantera)

Les is simply unbelieveable, I mean who else could play bass solos while keeping rhythm at the same time? You'd know Satriani taught him.

John Myung, this man is the complete bass player. I had a look at some of his bass tabs and in some cases he goes from the third fret to the sixteenth! Put this together with the amount of rhythms Dream Theater play and you'll find it simply in-human.

Justin Chancellor. What can you say about this guy? He simply has the sound that Tool need to be a complete band. And thats saying something when you have the likes of Danny Carey, Maynard Keenan, and Paul Jones in the band.

Cliff Burton was the masterclass behind Metallica's success. I cant say I can think of a song anything less than average that was written by Cliff Burton. He brought the classical aspect to their music that made them so great.

Rex Brown. I just love the way this guy plays bass. He keeps everything together when Dimebag is on one of his awesome solos. He brought the exact same to what was missing in Down. Songs like Domination, Cemetery Gates, Avoid The Light etc. are just some of examples of his ability.

Makis from Necromantia is truly awesome.
He plays 'lead' on an 8-string bass.
Has to be heard to be beleived.

And the guy from Marduk, very unconventional.
    Breath-taking bass work altogether.

Robin Eaglestone for pure style and songwriting.

You can get 8string bass's? mines only a 5 string  (most songs only use 4 tho, which kinda sucks).

ps: Les Claypool plays lead in primus, does most of the solo's and is the vocalist, hes more or less the whole band, drummer damn good aswell, guitarist doesnt really get a chance with Claypool there tho.

and flea.....surprised he hasn't been mentioned?

I reckon the best bassist I've heard is Jaco Pastorius although, his stuff is hard to listen to, wouldn't be one of my favourites.

Yeah he rocks! Here you raise another point though: plectrum or fingers? Lots of great bassists (like Ellefson indeed) use a plectrum but I can't help thinking bass must be finger-picked or it sounds too much like a guitar....

the best bassest has to be cliff burton.
if you ever get a live version of master of puppets with cliff burton then you are in for a treat with cliffs live bass solo.
it is really hard to get your hands on though,
