Simple question, what's your favourite guitar solo?

Mine would have to be the reeaaaalllyy long solo in:
    lynard skynard - freebird.

    Class. :)

    Dream Theater - Fatal Tragedy.

Fookin amazing four minute long solo, with unreal sweeps, in-human shredding. And all of it has melody aswell. Truely one of the greatest solos ever!

Led Zep - Whole Lotta love.
Although that's more than likely down to the fact that I've just learned it!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,136 ✭✭✭Pugsley

    Metallica - Master of Puppets

This song is made by that solo :)

    Extreme - Play with me

Damn this one is fast, cant choose between them.

    Slash's Snakepit - Serial Killer

It's a ridiculously amazing solo, and has remained my favourite since the day I heard it.

    Anathema - Sleepless

The solo to that send shivers down my spine every time I hear it... It's unbeleivable.

    Alive - pearl jam

hmmm ...i'd have to pick a few...

    soma/porcelina - smashin' pumpkins
aphrodisiac jacket/love removal machine - the cult
guns and roses - estranged( off the live double cd)
hendrix - all along the watchtower
    prince - purple rain

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 953 ✭✭✭superconor

hmm. i think mines would be:
Whiskey In The Jar - Thin Lizzy
    The Trooper - Iron Maiden

actually a lot of iron maiden songs have truly rocking solo's.

loads really... but ones that spring to mind are

    deep purple - highway star
thin lizzy - the rocker (long version)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

Hmmmm..... as stressed above, so many to chose from.

Off the top of my head i'd probably say:

    Slash - Guns n Roses - Nightrain
John Frusciante - RHCP - I could have lied
Mark Knophler - Dire Straits - Sultans of swing
Hughy Morgan - FLC - Couldn't Get it Right

Just a few there. As you can tell, speed alone doesn't quite cut it for me. (DIE BUCKETHEAD DIE!!!!!!)

    Dave Gilmore - Comfortably Numb

    Mike.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,601 ✭✭✭Kali

Aye gilmours 2nd solo in comfortably numb, more to do with the actual song than any particular genius in the solo, but it works so well.

Apart from that Lynyrd Skynyrd (Gary Rossington in paricular) - Free Bird .. absolutely amazing.. and hella long

best solo ever...mmm probably metallica one, but then again jimi hendrix's voodoo chile is hella good.....mmmm or what aboot...this drag on for a while, but ill stop it here.

Another solo that springs to mind is the outro solo to:
    metallica - fade to black
One hell of a solo and it fits in so well with James' rythm guitar in the background.
    :D

Yeah I know Zappa is a great guitarist. I heard one of his cd's (my friend has it). He sounds like John Petrucci on crack when he plays his solos. Now thats saying something! But you have to remember that this is a Rock/Metal forum. Zappa is Jazz isn't he?

Since there has been little/no mention of Power Metal Id say:
Sinergy - Suicide By my Side
It has a cracker of a solo in it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 484 ✭✭ManWithThePlan

    Dream Theatre - Fatal Tragedy.
    John Petrucci is amazing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,601 ✭✭✭Kali

Absolutely (although, Zorba didn't have the solo did it? Still class piece done by proper bouzouki players)
    to add to them:
    A load by Jimi Hendrix
Hotel California (As Ricardo Smith said)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 351 ✭✭Darkillion

before the 'chorus' at the end there is a solo.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 235 ✭✭domeara01

well i would have to say a couple.

Children of the damned - Iron Maiden
    Wanderlust(intro) - nightwish (absolutely amazing)
Most of the nightwish stuff is brilliance.
Freebird if you can find a guitarist able to play it then it rocks.
i like a hell of a lot more but i wont mention that at the moment.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 484 ✭✭ManWithThePlan

Freebird if you can find a guitarist able to play it then it rocks.

I was watching a band playing in one of my locals and they played Freebird.
They had to get a fella they knew from the audience to come up and play that song only.

The solo he played was absolutely amazing, i'd say it was well over 10 minutes, sounded alot like the original, had a few additions and in my opinion sounded better than the original. This guy was playing it so fast and was even playing the solo behind his back.

The band is Men in Black, i think they're from Killkenny and i'd certainly see them again. :D

    Pearl Jam - Cprduroy
    Soundgarden - SUperunknown

It's always changing, but at the moment it's Megadeth- Tornado of Souls and Dream Theater- Take the Time (outro solo)

John Petrucci's version of Flight of the bumble bee is pretty amazing as well
