O2 or Vodafone?

A friend of mine works in Vodafone. She's making me some sort of special offer (don't remember the incentives tbh... but something like 1/2 price rental) if I'll move from O2 to them. Also, I'd get to keep my phone number (except for changing from 086 to 087) and would get a redirecter on the old (086) number.

Mind you ... it'd also mean my upgrade status would go back to zero... which isn't so bad, I guess (O2 customer care tell me that I should be eligible for an upgrade - their system is down and I have to ring them in the morning to be sure)

Is it worth sticking with O2 ? I've been with them a few years now and found their service to be good - with decent coverage and good pricing.

What would you suggest? Upgrade to a media capable phone with O2 and stick with them? Upgrade and then convert to Voda? Convert to Voda without upgrading? Do nothing? ... I have a Nokia 5510 at the moment.

    Just curious.

    Ah f3ck I'll make a poll ;)

oh... and if you'd recommend converting to Vodafone, please explain why... so far, to me, O2 seem to be the better network.

voda are much more expensive... unless of course everyone you know is with them :) plus they don't offer 500 free texts from their site. them's've saved me a fortune

stick with O2 and sleep with ease in the knowledge that you are responsible for annoying vodaphone ads BUT you are not paying for them.

ok- there's another question kinda hidden in there...

are the media phones worth the asking price (upgrade probably knocks €100 off) or are they simply the biggest rip-off lump of gimmicky crap?

    Stick with O2 reguardless.
Better service, network and they aren't a semi-monoply like Vodafone...

I've been with 086 since day one(worked for the buggers)

    Anyway... Example:

"New Years EVe/Day(00:00)" "Everyone trying to msg other ppl... everyone had 087"... "exellent coverage in both networks but 086 has way way more capacity"... "no one on 087 could get through to anyway" "me on my first try on 086 :) gets through"

"not to mention those 2 occasions when 087 was completely DOWN all over teh city centre"

    Discracful

The majority of people at the moment want you to convert to Atari Jaguar. You're gonna need a pretty big bag.

Go to vodafone, so you can be secure in the fact that most of your money is being spent to have "Vodafone" written on Michael Schumachers car (which is so fast most of the time as to render reading the ads from trackside impossible).

Erm, when you upgrade, aren't you locked into that provider for 12 months? Is that just Vodafone?

If you do stick with O2 which i strongly advise, i've had accounts with voda and O2 and O2 is clearly the better coverage and price wise. If you go for an upgrade won't you have to sign another contract for at least 1 year?

Don't bother with the media fones man, i've seen a few and the pics are crap!Better off getting a nice wee 8310 lovely little fone to use lots of stuff to keep you occupied on it, great battery life and its small and handy to carry around.

mmmmmmm, something tells me that snowball has english issues.

I use vodafone, they are a bit too expensive at the moment. I hate when a bill comes as they always seem to get bigger.

Snowball - a move to Meteor isn't an option. Read my first post again and you'll see that I'm being offered a deal to move to Vodafone. Meteor were never a consideration under the circumstances, and with their coverage being what it is, won't be for quite a while. They'd be fine if I stayed in one place all the time... but I don't... and 'mobile' is the operative word ...

As things are, and based on the advice and experiences both above and in the "Best Network" thread in the Wireless board, I reckon I'll stick with O2 and not bother 'upgrading' to a Media messaging capable phone (unless I can get one dead cheap that is ;) ).

Nope, not worth it. I have one cos I got it for 1/8 of the price. IMO, Voda have a more reliable service and better coverage. I also have 1/4 of the price rental, so I'm not affected too much by priciness issues, my bill is still about €10 less per month than my prepaid 087 and 086 mates, despite the fact that I make waay more calls. If I was paying normal rates and getting a billpay phone though, I'd go for O2, simply because they give you more with the cheaper rental rates.

does anybody have any hard facts that show which operator is better?

Look at who you ring, if 086 stay with them, else vodafone.

In Dublin Vodafone have a better network from my experience. 1 st time connect every time.

o2 look a bit cheaper, but are harder to get upgrades from, You need a minimun spend of €1200.

Thats the answer, I'd give on the media fones aswell, they are big awkward and ugly, and just how many times do you reckon, you will use picture messaging anyhow, considering how many have those phones.
I also have an 8310, and agree with the above, it doubles up as a radio walkman aswell:cool: which is very handy.

    Regarding O2 Vs Vodafone.
I have a Bill pay phone with both.I find the coverage on Vodaphone a lot better than O2.
When I am on the road,I always prefer to have the 087 with me.
The problem with O2 in rural areas always has been the lag behind in getting the masts up. Basically , there are many Garda stations that were too near National Schools to survive the radiation protests.
If you are in a town, no real difference, that I've noticed.
Cost wise, O2 win hands down, unless, you use Vodafones Phone a friend, option a lot in the evenings and weekends on the Bill phones, or use their option to have 5( I think) nominated numbers on their Commercial contracts.

Yeah, in that he/she has problems with the English language.
Snowball, if you bothered to READ the original question, you'd see moving to Meteor isn't an option. And also Meteor is an atrocious network, it sells GPRS and media phones and supports NEITHER on its network, it's obviously running itself into the ground when it's coming out with ridiculous marketing ploys like free sms and free phone calls (085 to 085 only, lol, i know ONE person with 085 phone).

Back to the original question. I started out 5 years ago with digifone and found them great, I only moved to Vodafone after 2 years to get an upgrade phone and I was appalled at how much more I was paying to Vodafone. I've since moved back to O2 and wouldn't go back to those swindling Vodafone guys for anything. O2 calls and sms are cheaper, the coverage is BRILLIANT, what more do you want.

they are ****e. reception is bollocks and they're only good if you ring mainly 085 numbers. and seeing as i'm the only person i know with 085 i'm dropping them in the morning. going from what i've read here and after looking at the tarrifs for both O2 and Vodafone i'm going for O2
