Nice piece in the 'Logon' (The Internet and Technology Column) section of todays Herald which really suprised me. Usually any mention of Telecoms by Ronan Price who does this piece is total Eircom/Esat press release material. Heres what he had to say:
Without a doubt the most important development for Irish Internet users this year was the introduction of sort-of-flat-rate access, pioneered by Esat years ago, abandoned and then revived this year by UTV (and Esat again).
No more humungous bills from Eircom - Flat-Rate gives you a big wodge of time online for a set fee. In UTV's case, thats 150 hours off-peak a month for €30 - the best value bar none and more that enough for 99pc of people. As a bonus you get cheaper voice calls with UTV too.
For lighter users, UTV has a cheaper option as does Esat. Completely flat rate access (peak and off peak) is also in sight next year thanks to an order from communications minister Dermot Aherne......................................and a bit farther into the column was this:
The award for most ridiculous internet offering surely goes to the ubiquitous Eircom for offering broadband access at a laughably expensive €107 a month. Users in other countries can get online with broadband for about €40 a month. Even accounting for economies of scale, we're getting a raw deal...............................
