    free to all www.ztrace.com

hides the program inside your laptop, and if its stolen, next time the user goes online, it secretly checks to see if it has been stolen, and can notify the authorities to one's location for taking action etc..

now there's probably similar apps out there like this and have been for ages , but i haven't noticed them.

has anyone used this security tool or anything similar, whats it like to use ?

    :)

The way these apps usually seem to work is to give you (the legitimate owner) a choice of whether you want the machine to ask for a password before dialling up to the Net (password correct - it just dials, password incorrect, it phones your home number instead) or to dial up your home phone number every time (if you're at home the phoen is engaged and won't ring, if the nasty thief isn';t in your home your phone will ring and you get to 1471 to find out where it is)

Sounds like the kind of thing that could be knocked out easily with a format TBH. I know that if I robbed a laptop for the machine as opposed to company secrets, the first thing I'd do it wipe the HD.

    yeah thats true,

but you never know some thieves, they mightn't think of re-formatting if even they know how to..

and besides they could sell it on to a prospective buyer whom they think the machine was bought legit..

from reading into this particular app from the mag it doesn't mention there's a password login at the start for dial up or for staic ip etc...

the thing is once the owner or the person who installs this on their laptop does, they are the only people that know about it..

in other words this stays silent once activated and hidden from any user that might steal it, but as you say nothing is safe,

and i'm sure people can do a reg check to find out if a program like this is installed, but then again it comes down to how smart the thief is, and if a thief is out to steal a laptop , he/she probably knows a bit about them, as would a car thief to a car
