2003 looks like being another superb year for live hiphop in Ireland with the long-awaited debut Irish appearance by one of hiphop's most talented and awe-inducing rappers - the legendary New Yorker Kool Keith who brings his new KHM project to Dublin's Redbox on Saturday 18th January. And the good news for old skoolers is that the show will be a mix of Ultramagnetic MCs and Dr Octagon tracks as well as tjhe new KHM material.

Kool Keith's distinct style of smooth lyrical delivery backed by edgy beats have been at the forefront of challengingly innovative hiphop since the mid-80s when he led the Ultramagnetic MCs to prominence as one of the block party favourites of that era. His first solo project Dr Octagon once again saw him leading the pack - it was this album that introduced the world to Dan the Automator - the main creative force behind Gorillaz amongst others, plus DJ Shadow and Q-Bert. His collaborators in the late '90s inlcuded The Prodigy and Tricky - his vocals in The Prodigy's 'Smack my Bitch Up' being the most well-known.

July 2002 saw a serious return to form with the release of KHM's 'Game' long player an album which has maitained a steady position in the US R&B charts in the five months sinbe its release. 'Game' maintains his hallmark funked-out, futuristic sound is released in Europe on trendy K7 records in late January 2003 This live show will consist of Keith himself, H-Bomb and Marc Live.

"It has that significant branch off, that futuristic sound," Keith told MTV recently. "All my records have that distinctiveness. KHM is more into the new stuff. We like to make that brand new sound which nobody is doing, so it makes us creative. Everything I've made and still make will sound different from anybody in the music industry. That's guaranteed," he continued. "I'm always going to make groundbreaking stuff."

    Dublin awaits with bated breathe...

He comes in many forms and many incarnations, but his style is distinctly his own. Just as there's no mistaking his smooth lyrical delivery and searing hip-hop prose with its underlying edgy beats, there's no denying the incredible force of power that is Kool Keith. Whether as a founding member of the legendary Ultramagnetic MCs, or in the guises of his renegade rap personas that include Dr. Octagon and Dr. Dooom, Keith has established himself as an innovative lyricist whose erudite raps stretch the envelope to the limit while exciting and entertaining the listener.

Keith Thornton first emerged as part of the legendary New York crew, the Ultramagnetic MCs, back in 1987. At a time when rap was slowly making the transition from B-Boy braggadocio to a more aggressive, politicized stance, the group quickly established themselves as lyrical innovators with such classics albums as Critical Beatdown, Funk Your Head Up, and the Four Horsemen. The group received global critical acclaim. After the Ultramagnetics' demise, Kool Keith re-emerged helming various hip-hop groupings with artists including Dan the Automator (Gorillaz) and DJ Q-Bert. He also released the long player Dr. Octagonecologyst under the moniker Dr. Octagon. Through his various releases Keith explored his many sides, from the playful to the downright carnal, releasing such independent records as Kool Keith's Sex Style and Dr. Dooom's First Come, First Served. In addition to his many rap outings, Keith proved he was not averse to cross-genre experimentation and even collaborating with Tricky “Evolution Revolution Love Remix” the outfit Hardkiss on "Abandon Ship" (Sharks & Mermaids mix) on the Astralwerks imprint; in fact, Kool Keith appears on the Multi- Platinum Album Fat Of The Land by Prodigy, as the voice on the hit single "Smack My Bitch Up" and on the track "Diesel Power." Kool Keith also appears as Dr. Ultra, the lead character in a series of nationally broadcast television ads for Sprite.

KHM “GAME”, Keith’s most recent album, is a group project, the first since the famous Ultramagnetic days. The group consists of Kool Keith, H-Bomb and Marc Live. Since its US release July 23rd 2002 KHM has consistently climbed the Billboard Top R&B charts.
