Why don’t we start a petition on www.petitiononline.com to at least get all the BBC Radio Stations on the Irish EPG.
There were petitions to try and save [.tv] and to get SKY to broadcast their channels in widescreen.
We could link it at digitalspy and on this forum and when enough people sign it try to get mediabullet and Wotsat to put it up on their websites.
I think if this was done properly we would get thousands of people to sign it.
Do you all think this would be a good idea?

I must say I dont have a huge problem with this as I can tune them in on "Other channels"

Good idea yes, hopefully can't hurt

(provided it won't rock the boat and get the channels taken away from "other channels" too)

And we've been doing what for over a year now? Campaign....

I'm with spectre on this one.... it could rock the boat too much. Half there is better than not at all... And the example that you provide havent been a raging sucess either...

Don't do it!

What we have we hold. If the muppets on Digital Spy get onto it expect xeroxes of the following style of post:

"you irish alweys whining we have hour tv and radio stations he he"

and the likely result is having even more choice blocked to Irish subscribers.

Heads down like Larne Catholics on this one please!

Apart from an ease of convenience, what use would it be? If you don't mind using the "Other Channels" function then I don't see the point.

However, unlike the issue of TV channels like UTV and Channel 4, xenophobes on Digital Spy would have a hard time trying to give good reasons for maintaining the status quo as RTÉ1, 2FM, RnaG and Lyric FM are all on the Sky EPG in the UK!

wouldn't it be a waste of money to encrypt all the BBC radio services considering they have barely any rights issues with the exception of maybe the odd concert

The Average person doesn't know how to use the Other Channels and no reason why the BBC suddent put there stations on the EPG when there are FTA.

There is a perfectly good reason why the BBC do not put them on the Irish EPG.It's because the Irish EPG is treated by Sky as a seperate entity with separate charges.
Sky would charge the BBC to put them on it and the BBC cannot be seen to be paying UK public money for the provision of a service to a foreign country.
the fact that they are available through other channells is simply the BBC being nice to us as technically if they wanted to be mean, they could "08" them on us.
It doesn't cost the Beeb any extra for our digiboxes to accidently receive their radio channels, as we are in the footprint.
To use that awful channel four phrase we are getting the benefit of fortuitous (sp) reception , by virtue of our location.
5 live of course is "08'ed" due to football rights, and thats not the BBC's fault.
Thats why unreasonable demands should not be made as it will get certain peoples backs up.

Thats true, but, then that was part of the "special" deal between RTÉ and Sky, in that the former gave the latter No money for Irish EPG carriage, so as (in $ky's best interests) RTÉ TG4 and TV3 would only be available in the minimal family pack.
In other words $ky decided to forego charges in the certain Knowledge that, the Irish channels presence would gain more subscribers for them, if people had to subscribe to get them.
Countless hundreds, probably decided on Coronation st alone, it being on the less widely received TV3 as opposed to RTÉ.
$KY not really being interested in the Radio market wouldn't have issues with allowing RTÉ radio onto the UK EPG as part of that deal.

Is it just the British Terrestrial Channels that have to pay extra to get on the Irish EPG or does every channel have to pay extra to get on the Irish EPG.
Surely smaller channels would not be able to afford two big charges.

I'd say heads down too. I have no problem tuning them in myself. And TBH i'd say the majority of sky users don't use the radio stations, so they won't notice if they're on EPG or not.

Now theres a distinction! The charges may not be much, but the principal applies where the BBC top dogs are concerned, ie the Irish Republic is a foreign country and any charge to provide a service there cannot be justified unless it makes a profit for them.
The only real exception being the World service, and strangely Radio Cymru, the former being there in the same way as the BBC pays for that channel to be available world wide on short and medium wave, and the latter, a quirk.

Can someone explain how to get these on 'other channels' . . .

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Press "Services" then "Other Channels"

Boo hiss, Damo. :D

To get the BBC Radio channels. Press services, select System Details, then select add channels. Enter the following details

Frequency 11.798
Polarisation H
Symbol Rate 27500
FEC 2/3

Then select search for channels. You should see a big list of things. You can then use the yellow key to tick the channels you want. All of the Radio channels work, with the exception of 5 Live and 5 Live Extra. When you have selected whatever you want press the select key.

Then when you want to listen to them press Services and then other channels.

Can you not get BBC radio on the English FTV card?

If so, why not just get a friend or relative in England to get you one?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Of course you can. Its just a little bit hidden on Irish Subs. And you can get them at their EPG positions by turing your box on with the card out!

Most people on this forum do have FTV Cards but it gets very annoying changing cards around every few minutes to just listen to a radio station.
Switching cards wipes out your favourite channels for a start.

Well it does happen on my box.:(

not on my box it doesnt

If you put in a card that has for example 103 as a favourite channel
and then replace it with a card that has 103 as a different channel, 103 will be wiped from your favourite channels.
Swap a Scottish FTV card for a Welsh FTV card and you will get the drift.

The BBC has said that it can get away with broadcasting its Radio stations (apart from 5 Live) as FTA is because they only appear on the UK EPG. Although they can't block listeners from receiving them outside the UK without encrypting them, the current situation keeps the rights holders (where they exist) happy.

When did they say that? This has nothing to do with rights issues (save for 5live) it is simply that the BBC do not want to pay to have them included on the EPG. I have a letter from them from years back asking me to confirm that reception was possible as they wanted people to be able to receive BBC radio (except 5live)
in ROI.

Yes, Tony is right. I'd imagine there would be nothing really to stop them being on the Irish EPG but the BBC won't be spending UK license fee money on it. The ball would be in Sky's court.

I'm quite happy to be able to receive them all (except 5live of course which is a shame) via Other Channels.

On a slightly different note, is TalkSport on Family Pack or something? Since it's not available on FTV card
