What kind of cables do I need to connect each pc to the router?

Usual way would be to connect all three to a hub via straight thru patch cables and make the router the default gateway.

And just having router connecting to a cable modem and the two pc's connected to the router wouldn't work?

It would depend on your router.

Most of them have only one internal interface meaning that you could connect via a crossover cable to a single PC. If you want to use multiple PC's then you need a hub or switch.

If your router has more than one internal interface than you can connect both PC's directly to it.
