VHI HealthSteps - Value For Money?

    Hi all,

Just going through the documentation for VHI's new HealthSteps scheme.

Basically, it entitles you to 'up to' €25 off each visit to the doc, dentist and optician, 50% from prescription specs, €51 off consultancy fees, €40 off pathologist fees, etc. etc.

The cost is €4.25 a week.

If I go for it, it'll double my VHI payments.

Has anyone signed up for it? Anyone not signed up for any reason? Is it value for money? Opinions appreciated.

    - Dave.

I'm 30 and in the last 4 years I've visited my GP 11 times (less in the previous 4), including twice for an accident, a consultant once and replaced my glasses once.

Over 4 years that’s €889.89 spent on these services. Of which I could recover €479.01 (based on your figures) or €119.75 per year. The service costs €221.00 per year.

Doesn't look like great value for money unless you are chronically ill, older or have young children and need to visit the GP a lot. But who knows what is in the future for any of us.

Like with all insurance, you are paying for cover for what might happen.
Therefore it's not a good idea to look at your past and decide based on that whether to increase you cover or not.
You should decide based on whether you can afford it as undoubtedly in my opinion it's a good investment, to cover yourself for potentially very costly future illness/accidents.
