Hi, when playing DVDs on my comp the sound breaks up and the data rate stutters. IN fact when there is and read/write activity the sound on my system stutters and the processing % goes through the roof, I've tried chanding the bus, slave/master switch, no luck, replacing the drive, I'm going to try another OS (it's under win2k at the mo.) but doubt it';ll worr. any ideas? IRQ settings? damaged motherboard? it's got me :(

    any help appreciated.

It sounds to me like your DVD rom is running in PIO mode where it should be running in DMA mode. Check the properties of your IDE controllers (i'm assuming its an IDE drive) in device manager, and change PIO to DMA/UDMA if possible. If the DMA option is unavailable/greyed out, you might need to download drivers for your motherboard chipset. If you have a VIA-based board, get the 4-in-1 drivers from via.com.tw .

Is the drive configured to run under DMA.

Go into the Device Manager and under IDE controllers you'll be able to change the settings. T'will require a reboot.

Tis probably configured as "PIO" (Programmed I/O mode) which uses the CPU to process data through.

    Might work for you.

I even brought my drive back to the shot and gave out to them for a solid 45 mins until they agrees to replace it to get rid of me. when the replacement didn't work I freaked. now the karma is in allignment and my PC is a temple once more. Cheers.

Just to rub in any pain you might have, I have been that shop worker who knows perfectly well that someone is trying to return a perfectly working product. Always worth trying everything before going back with it, less embarrassment.

the replacement was faster at burning cds, so it was worth it :)
