    i do a bit of work with as/400 in my job. the ibm software thats used is called rumba.
    what sort of stuff are you needing to know?

    rumba is used for doing everything to do with data entry and network printers. its easy to grasp the basics.
    tell us what you need to know and we might be a bit more helpful..sorry smile.gif

    Sutty,

    First thing you would need to do would be to get the Consultant to tell you as much as possible about the Job and what is required to do the job....
    You will not learn AS400 overnight....

    But best of luck with the job hunt....

    Hey folks,,
    Give Sutty a break, he is only looking for Help, I wonder if the tables were turn would you all appreciate the kind of remarks you are posting......

    Give respect....

    One thing in suttys favour. If they are looking for someone to train in he has the advantage if he studys up and tells them he's never used it but show compentance in other OS's (Windows only don't count).

    To hire a professional AS/400 admin guy would normally cost a serious wad of cash.

    Hey silverski.
    What are you talking about ? Given the relative obscuity of AS400 ppl have been as helpful as possible in this post with lots of sound advice (as always), yourself included.
    If u reread the thread it should be apparent that my chidish post wasn't directed at Sutty (who happens to be one of my favourite puppets).

    hi lads,

    i know a few os such as Linux (red hat6.0), dos,win3.1-2000 win nt4 as well, i want to get that beos one to top up an as well, as for the remark made by Canaboid i think it was directed at the celtic tiger and thats ok as he is a bit some times(he lives in leixlip as well) smile.gif only joking

    Nice sutty smile.gif While AS/400 isn't something you can learn overnight it is very simple once you know what the commands do.

    Nearly all the commands are made up of 3 character shortend words and normally goes Verb-noun.

    eg.
    DSPWRKSTS = Display Work Statistics.
    ENDJOB = End Job.
    DSPMSG = (guess biggrin.gif )

    it also has text menu system. F1= Help and you also have a Prompt (F4) which will give you possible options for a command if possible. The IBM manuals are painfully helpful as long as you read them in order. eg, If you have a problem it will say do step a,b,c,d,etc,etc. So you could spend hour or so going through the steps but you do eventually fix the problem.

    Beyond that, you can run anything off it. I currently have a domino server, HTTP, FTP, TELNET, SMTP servers running and most of the users don't even use the OS on the AS/400.

    (as you can see I'm bored)

    A bit rich coming from the biggest (and most unfunny) spammer on the boards.
    If you can convince me that "I am a bicycle" is either a) Funny or b) a useful contribution to the boards, then I will retract my assertion that you are a twat and publicy apologise. Can't say fairer than that.

    And with that I stand down..... blah, blah, wibble, wibble......etc.

    oooooooohhhhhhh.....I have to prove nothing to you and so because of your last statment I will re-enter a statement that I edited from a previous post.......

    Sad indeed.
    May I respectfully suggest that you shorten your name to just TCT. In so doing ppl can refer to you either as "The Celtic Tiger" or "The Celtic Twat" as they see fit. That way everyone is happy.

    I work with WWman... As400 is very much like vax ( commands wise) We use Rumba 5.2 as an interface, it's always worked and it is a very easy program to configure and trouble shoot !!!!! Pluse there is a wizard when you install it and that makes it a whole lot easyer !!!!! and no WWman i won't show u where it is on the network !!! wink.gif

    Vax??? God I use to use that through a terminal emulator it DEC. When I left I had 1700 mails in my inbox cos I couldn't find the "gold key" on my qwerty keyboard.
