A portal is a name given to a site that offers a broad array of resources and services, such as e-mail, bulletin boards, shopping and search facilities.

The first portals were AOL and Yahoo - but have since been joined by many others - notably the original search engines.

Similarly, internally in organisations, a company may have an intranet, or an information portal. The latter usually offers connectivity to email, company applications and collaboration tools.

    hope this helps.
