Help on "Routing and Remote Access"

    Windows 2000 Server

    Routing and Remote Access.

The idea being that there is a win2k server with ISDN line, wishing to provide net access to entire office (5 wkstations w2k)

DHCP assigning the pcs ip addresses. DNS also set up.

Ive got to the point where if you go to ping a web address (www.yahoo.com) from client machine, the server will dial up and make connection.

But, it appears that the DNS is not working correctly because the client will say 'unknown host www.yahoo.com'

BUT if you type in an IP address e.g ping 195.218.115.65
    (thats www.boards.ie)
    it will ping no problemo.

Ive been messing with it for about 4 hours now and i cant seem to resolve the issue.

Oh, and if you do a 'ipconfig /all' at the client machine, you can see that the 'DNS Servers' entry is blank.
And if you manually enter the DNS server of the ISP into the network settings, all works dandy, BUT after having doing that, you have to flush the DNS settings and re-resolve by issuing a 'ipconfig /registerdns'
which is a pain , because secretaries cannot be doing this everytimne they want net access :(

    Any help anyone???

set the DNS server's on the scope options of AD on the DC. use ipconfig / release / ipconfig / renew (on clients..), ipconfig /flushdns (on DC) to see if its working..

Specify what dns servers to use on the dhcp server settings. Get clients to release and renew. Should see dns entries then.

ICS = Pain in the arse.

The damn thing keeps dialing up by itself all out of the blue and you cannot stop it.

NAT = You have to disable DNS and DHCP and let the NAT handle it for you - hence you cannot specify the external DNS servers.

It doesnt matter anyway, I set up NAT, and manually entered the external DNS servers into the clients - > It works, so as a wise man once said ::

"If its broken and it works, don't fix it"

    Thanks Guys anyway!
