Changing from NTL Digital to Sky Digital

Can all you Sky Digital heads tell me if it's worth changing from NTL to SKY? Would you recommend Sky Digital. I'm thinking I'll keep the basic package with NTL so still get UTV and CH4 and the point in the bedroom. Any advice? Thanks!

Definitely! I've had sky digital for three years and have never had any outages (which NTL has lots of).
You also get more channels for the price, and a *much* better box office service.

Go for it i'd say, anythings better than NTL.

Thanks! Just wanted one person to tell me that. I've had NTL digital since July and I've had problem after problem. The latest one being that I can't get the digital service at all and it's gonna take over a week for a technician to come out. Just rang them to cancel the subscription and first of all I got a chap telling me it was a 12 month contract. I told him I'm not getting what I'm paying for so had to ring sales. Sales put me through to another department and finally when I'd convinced yer one that I no longer want to pay for a service I'm not getting she said she pass on my details to another department. It's no wonder they don't get anything done in there with everyone passing the buck! Sky Digital here I come. I believe Dixons are installing now for €35.

Unlike Cable or MMDS, if you cancel after a year the box etc is still yours and you still get, FREE:

just been to Dixons and got the full whack. €37.50 installation and €60 a month. Yer man tried to sell me insurance for €11 a month and was all nice until I told him I didn't want it. He also tried the line, 'the remote will cost you €100 to replace' until I told him it's a hell of a lot cheaper in Argos. I hate that about the likes of Dixons and Currys etc. They ram that bloody insurance down your throat.

What are you on about? Standard installation is €75. I got it for €37.50 and my subscription costs €60 a month. Where did you get €100 from? What costs €25 at most?

I think he's referring to the Dixons guys claim of 100 for a remote.

I'f I'd known about your site I would have ordered from you Tony. Unfortunatly the only company I saw offering half price installations was Dixons. Are they supposed to give you a Disney Channel gift with an order?

Sorry thought about that possibilty after I posted, I'm not being sarky just trying to learn about how guys see other outlets and hopefully improve on mine.

Its no problem , my post was badly phrased did not mean to be critical. If they are carrying out the current promotion then they should have given you a pack on signup unless they have no stock. In any case if they dont just call round and I'll give you one from my stock.

OMG! After being told yesterday by NTL that I could cancel my digital subscription and heading off to order Sky, I got a call today from NTL again, telling me I can't cancel the contract and that I'd have to pay the rest of the money first. Well, after about 20 minutes of explaining all the things that have gone wrong with their service and explaining that I was told the day before I could go, she finally went off to a manager who told her I could cancel the contract. In fairness, yer one was only doing her job and she was very nice about the whole thing but flippin 'eck. It was a pain in the ass getting thier service in and it's an even bigger pain getting the feckers out. Sky Digital better be worth it after all this. Oh, and the company that do the installations for Dixons provide Panasonic Boxes. Electroplus their called. Anyone know of them?

At least with Satellite unlike the Chorus/NTL you can cancel after a year and STILL have more TV and Radio than you can eat.
Or even learn German and have 20 or so main German Channels just by moving the dish a bit...

With Sky you actually OWN the dish, box, remote, LNB etc. So insurance isn't quite silly as it might seem as you have to pay the subscription for a year minimum, though usually you can change which package you on after a month.

I have two Digiboxes and PC based Digital Satellite and no special insurance. If you get robbed or burnt down your household insurance might cover you.

Moslty (Sure Tony can explain better) the so called "Insurance" sold at "high st" shops etc is NOT insurance at all but a pricey maintenence agreement by another name...

At least DELL call it maintence (It worth getting their 3 year next day on site if you use a Laptop or PC for work/business).

(WARNING DON'T move your dish without understanding how to line up a Satelite dish... And putting little scratch across each joint to get it back to Sky!)

as far as I know my house insurance covers ariels and dishes falling and damaging themselves or something else.

Dixons don't actually install it, a sub-contractor will. I'm sure you'll get your disney pack

On the contrary its the rules of the promotion as defined by sky. It would be a logistical nightmare to have installers giving out the disney packs.

I agree with you which is why I doubt I'll be getting the pack from the installer.

If you do change to SKY you will probably have NTL analogue for another few months. My girlfriend (?foolishly) phoned NTL up (no mean feat in itself) to cancel the day that SKY was installed. Many months lated and several final demands NTL phoned up to say that we'd be cut off if we didn't pay our bill!

Considering all the bad reports I've heard about NTL I'm surprised they're still they're still in business.

I'm keeping the analogue for now as we have a point in the bedroom and it's nice to be able to tape one thing while watching another and having UTV and Channel 4. We've cancelled the digital and God only knows when they'll bother their ass to come take the Digibox away. They really are the 2nd most useless company on the face of the planet(After our Favourite Telco of course).

Heres another Shocking NTL story. My Uncle got go Digital last december. His 2 year old son broke the remote, Rang NTL asked for a new remote, Remote never appeared. After a couple of weeks my uncle is rightly P****d off, Goes and gets Sky(Better package etc.) decides to keep NTL for RTE\TV3\UTV\CH4, but dump go digital and Sky sports. That was March, I was in his house in August, He still has Go Digital, but no Sky Sports on NTL, has nothing but problems getting through to NTL, Eventually decides to stop paying the bill. October comes, NTL cut him off, and a guy calls out and collects the decorder. The guy from NTL asks "When did you call in to get rid of your decorder?"
Ans. March.
Ntl guy. "I was only told about it last week."
Heres my story. I got Sky in March, Rang NTL told them, dont want Sky Sports from them anymore. They stopped billing us for Sky Sports(analoge), but never collected the decorder. A few weeks later, decided to put the decorder in my room and I got Sky Sports free for 3 months. Sky kept billing me for the decorder rental. After about 3 months of phone, ntl called out and gave me my money back!!!!!!

Speaking of remotes. Ours broke after a week and it took 5 weeks to get a new one and about 7 calls to NTL. They still haven't come looking for the old one even though they insisted that they would need it back to be tested. Muppets! No wonder they're losing so much money.

This is a good one, compare the stories above about NTL and listen to this one about sky,
When my digibox was installed the remote control wouldnt work properly that day so i rang sky that night (cause i was rightly pissed off that i couldnt go interactive without the red button)
the next morning a sky repair man rang the house and asked if it would be ok if he came over after lunch.
At 2.00pm i had a brand spanking new remote control.
Although it was a fault from the start, that is a very good repair servicce.......... well done sky.
