DTS: it's not working on my dvd player but it should be. Help???

My DVD player's model: SANYO DC-AVD8501

I have 2 DVDs that contain DTS sound. I have the following problem with both of them.

I select DTS from the audio menu.
    I play the film.
    There is no sound whatsoever.

I know that my DVD player should be able to play DTS sound because on my dvd player there are a number of audio-types which it will play, and you can find out which one is currently in use by pressing a particular button on the remote-control, and the name of the type of audio in use will appear on the screen.
When I press this button, "DTS" does show up, so obviously the dvd-player has been made so that it will play DTS sound.

    It plays Dolby Digital perfectly.

Am I doing something else wrong?
Is my dvd player just faulty? (i have experienced various minor faults with the player within the last few 4 months and it is 10 months old).

    Can anyone help??

The problem might not be your DVD player. It could be your stereo or Digital Receiver.

Does this support DTS? If so, you may need to enable DTS on your receiver (or whatever you use to play sound)..

I think you may get a better response by posting this on the home entertainment board under technology, but I think Krusty_Clown may be right. Your problem would appear to lie with your reciever and speakers. Most recievers will not support dts, because it is a more advanced format, which you need 6 speakers for. It also has higher sampling rates. Consult the manual for your audio system anyway.

My dvd player came with 5 speakers and a subwoofer.

I assume that if the dvd player is programmed to say "DTS" on the LCD screen then it the player should play DTS.
    Am I wrong?

If I am wrong, then ultimately how do I go about getting DTS to work?

selling_irish your system cannot handle DTS Soundtracks it will only output DD5.1. (just checked that model number on the net heres a review for you http://www.homecinemachoice.com/testbench/frame.html?http://www.homecinemachoice.com/testbench/HomeCinemaSystems/Sanyo/SanyoDC-AVD8501.php)

If you want to hear DTS Soundtracks you will have to upgrade your Home Cinema Kit by buying a DTS receiver.

These can be purchased moderately cheaply... You can buy a low-range Yamaha digital receiver for around 250 squids..

Alternatively, you could upgrade your DVD player to one which has a DTS decoder built-in (as I understand it - may be wrong here) which has distinct outputs..

So, you could hook up your DVD player's distinct outputs to your amps distinct inputs..

    Does this make sense?

BTW Gerry: Speaker setup is the same for DTS and DD5.1.
    i.e. Center Speaker/Front Left/Front Right/Rear Left/Rear Right/Sub-woofer

You may be getting confused with DD6.1 which has an extra rear centre channel (once again, could be wrong here!).

But yes, you'd get a better (more accurrate) response on the Home Entertainment board..

btw just checked the spec of that system again selling-irish and it doesn't have a output so you couldn't connect it to another amp. That means no DTS for you unless you buy a new player & amp (and probably speakers as well). Sorry man.

    Gandalf.
