using their phone either text or ring some of the people in the phonebook asking who owns the phone.

a text message reading "who owns this phone" will go down as theft, and one reading "who am I" will go down as you being a nutter...

why is it theft if you are going to find out who owns the phone?

Personally speaking, i found a phone a while back. Rang their last dialed number. spoke to a friend of theirs who was with the person who lost the phone. met them and handed it back.

strange that i was not accused of stealing the phone. In fact i was thanked for the return of it...

Dial 171 and listen to their greeting. Possibly they say "Hi! This is *NAME*, leave a message". Possibly you know them.

Alternatively, call the mobile network (o2, vodafone or meteor) -from- the mobile. They'll Caller-ID you and they should be able to, if not give you the owners details, contact the owner themselves.

Either that or do what The_Bullman did with the last dialled number ;)

Yep. Look through the numbers. If you see an entry for 'mam' or 'dad' ring that obviously but any of the first few numbers(memory slot 1-5 etc not the order you see them cause they're displayed in alphabetical order by the phone) will do as these tend to be important numbers to the person which they entered first when they got the phone. ie the people closest to them, best friends, brothers/sisters etc. Either arrange to meet them to hand over phone or organise to leave the phone somewhere(shop, garda station etc) where they can collect it.
