either looking for someone to extract data via UNIX from a Sony 8mm DAT (112m - 5GB) tape and stick on CD for me

    D-8 tape btw.

    --- or ---

pick up a drive capable of reading it.

Anyone know of a data recovery place capable of doing this? Or fancy a nixer? Or have an old drive to sell?

    ta!

That's not a DAT tape. DAT are tiny little things with 4mm tape. A DDS2 DAT drive will fit 4GB native onto a 120M tape.

You'll also need to know how the information is stored on the tape - what backup program was used. Was it just tar/cpio or was it something Special?

Exabyte make machines that read and write 8mm tape. These are basically the same as the ones used in 8mm camcorders but have a bit of extra testing done on them to ensure data grade quality.

With a bit of luck this will, as longword says, have been written with cpio or tar but any backup software will also work.
