    RTE scores Champions League success

Irish broadcasters RTE and TV3 have been awarded the rights to show Champions League football in the Republic of Ireland from next season.

Public service broadcaster RTE and commercial service TV3 will divide up the rights between them, with TV3 showing two games on Tuesday and RTE showing two games on Wednesday.

The deal mirrors that agreed with other broadcasters around Europe, after Uefa restructured its rights when a European commission report forced it to split them between several broadcasters in each country, rather than giving them exclusively to one.

Gerhard Aigner, the chief executive of Uefa, said that the deal was "good for European football and for fans and viewers". Deals have also been finalised with broadcasters in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

Last month, BSkyB and ITV beat the BBC to the UK rights, paying £83m between them for the right to show live games for the next three years.

The agreement is a coup for public service broadcaster RTE, which also gets the rights to the final as part of the deal, because TV3 previously had the rights exclusively.

Premiership teams such as Manchester United and Liverpool are phenomenally popular in Ireland, with Champions League matches regularly pulling in audiences of over 300,000.

Teams now plan to conduct negotiations with pay TV operators hoping to show the remaining Champions League matches on pay-per-view in Ireland.

Yeah RTE did well this time round not only do they get the finals but they also get wednesday night which is the night TV3 pull in more viewers. Ie 160,000 tuesday to 300,000 wednesday. But that is due to the live game on UTV, on tuesday nights.

I just glad Apres Match will be back.
