I was listening to Newstalk last night on the way home and there were two guys on debating the issue of food and drink prices in Ireland. They were trying to defend what I regard as obnoxiously expensive prices for food and drink saying that the cost of supplies have gone up and in comparison to our cheaper European neighbours, they maintained that our tourism is seasonal and theirs is all year hence the price gaps for food and beverages. I think they were talking pants and I wanted to see what the rest of you enlightened folk who live in the real world think.

Totally out of hand, even look at the price difference between Dublin and the rest of Ireland..

I was abroad for a month, while abroad all my regular bills like rent, car, loan, mobile etc were debited from my account, I had a little extra, but not a major amount with me and was able to eat and live like a king.. the food, even in the basic takeaways was better than what you would find anywhere in Ireland and the service was excellent..

I managed to live it up, eat out most night, drinking nearly every night and came home with change and still a few euro in the bank, to which I was pleasantly surprised..

I dont know how anyone in the food industry can claim what they claim especially about prices and the such being to blame for such blatent rip offs... but they do..

    An example...

I was in a restaurant (not gonna say the name... yet!!) ordered a side order after the main course had arrived. It wasnt that much hassle to prepare and was served to the table moments later....

When the bill arrived they had charged a service charge for that one thing that came to 70% of the cost of the side order itself on top of the cost of the side order.. when I queried it, they said it was restaurant policy. I said fine, then I wont be back.. and then they expect a tip...
