Sorry for sounding like a complete noob here, but what are the current net / system / desktop secuity concerns other than the obvious password security, "don't open an attachment, if you don't know what it is", and "get your patches" type advice

Well the first step is locking down open ports on your computer so attempted intruders can't attempt to gain access to your pc remotely... e.g. a firewall of some description... you can have as many official microsoft security patchs as you like, but if you have services such as file/printer-sharing or IIS enabled without a firewall you could be asking for trouble (assuming you are running windows now)

Just run "netstat -an" at the command-line to check which ports are currently listening... then go download tiny personal firewall or zonealarm, or any other decent firewall.
