    Footballer tests positive for drugs
    31/10/2002 - 6:59:17 am

A professional footballer has tested positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone for the first time in England.

The English Football Association are currently investigating the positive test, which occurred within the last three months, and are keeping the identity of the player secret until the inquiry has been completed. The FA are refusing even to reveal which division he plays in or whether he is British or not.

The finding of 19-norandrosterone, a metabolite of nandrolone, was brought to light in UK Sport's quarterly anti-doping report published on Thursday.

An FA spokesman said: "We can confirm that this is the situation and we have an investigation ongoing.''

The FA are treading very cautiously as positive nandrolone tests have been a source of huge controversy in the past.

On the continent, several footballers have been banned including last year the Dutch international Jaap Stam just weeks after his transfer from Manchester United to Italian club Lazio.

As well as Stam, fellow Dutch internationals Frank de Boer and Edgar Davids, Portugal's Fernando Couto and Spain's Josep Guardiola were also banned.
    ......

I reckon its a high profile English player , if he was foreign (especially Oirish ) they'd have banned them by now ...

So who do we think it might be ???????

For sure he is a big fish.

I honestly cannot see it been an Irish player.

To me it is either a Dutch or Italian or Argi

I have a feeling it could be either Veron or Rudd. Don't ask me why but I cannot think of anyone in the arsenal or pool teams that would be that daft. Veron is, and Rudd plays with the dutchies who seem to take any ****e when they are away.

Then again Wiltord has been on fire.. everyone will be speculated about now.

They did say on Morning Ireland today that they got confirmation that it's not a Premiership player. So, bang goes your Veron, Wiltord or Rudd theory.

I dunno how accurate the Morning Ireland news is but I cannot find any mention on the FA's website about the division the player was from..

Also they seem to be pushing that Nandrolone is a naturally occurring / can be taken by accident which sounds like they are building up a defence for the Player in question which makes me think even more that its a high profile player ... hmmm

Dyer seems the likely suspect there given his race back to fitness for the world cup.

Is this really suprising anyone? This sort of thing is rife in sport and football is no different. England has always been lax in its testing procedures. Neither Japp Staam nor Paul Merson ever failed a drugs test (2 different types of drugs i know) but both were clearly playing competitive football at the time of thier daliances.
