What's the story with Forlan? Why can't he score? God knows he's had enough chances and he does it for his country?

    What do ye think?

A mate of mine clings to the idea that once he bags one (a proper one, not a gifted penalty), he won't stop.

Then again, time is marching on and it's getting ridiculous at this stage...

Confidence mate, I remember a certain mister Henry playing in Italy and he could not score for ****e, then he changed team, new life, the rest is history.

Now if only Forlan was called Henry.. I have seen him play for independiente (on the box) and he scored some crackers but the doubt is there in his mind now all the time, scored 4 in the reserves there last week so he has the ability but I do not think he is premiership material, could be proved wrong.
Just cause u do it in one country does no mean u will do it in another

Not to mention he changed position, he was played as a winger at Juventus, thus having notably less chances to score - it was only when he moved to Arsenal that Wenger decided to play him as an out and out striker.

The reason Forlan can't score is because he's $hite - what is it now, 30 games with one goal from the penalty spot? He's not good enough - I bet Middlesbrough are delighted that Utd 'snatched' him now :)

He doesn't work hard enough for it. Simple as that. If you watch top class strikers like Van Nistelrooy, he works his socks off to get on the end of things even if it means he could risk getting injured for it. Forlan doesn't, if you watch him he barely ever pressurises the defenders and doesn't normally go in for 50/50 challenges.

Another reason is that he plays too deep. If you watch him he is always around the centre circle for some strange reason. He thinks he's a midfielder. I think he would do better if he stayed on the last man like Van Nistelrooy does.

    Jackson,

Sorry but you commenting on Forlan being Sh!te is rather silly.
Yes he has not been scoring goals, but he has showed amazing talent and you cannot deny that, I actually think he would have been more comfortable playing for mbrough.

He seems very nervous anytime he is on the pitch and perhaps too eager to try and get his first proper goal for utd. and hence he makes very foolish mistakes and sometimes even resembles a headless chicken :)

But by any means he certainly is not Sh!te.

    Doh!

Has anyone else noticed a more then passing resemblance between Diego Forlan and Sally Gunnell? Watch out for it next time Uinited are playing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,399 ✭✭✭✭Thanx 4 The Fish

Right down to the wobbling head :)

shame he isn't as quick as Gunnell, he's not ****e but he doesn't do enough to warrant a first team spot, a year in the reserves might do him some good. Get his confidence up and come back to the premiership refreshed. This might lose him his national team spot though, which I am sure he would not be happy about.

He looks like Worzel Gummidge more than anything else, and has about as much mobility as the average scarecrow :) Seems a lot of Utd fans just can't admit that Forlan's a donkey. Reminds me of Eric Nevland actually.

Who are the United fans who did not find anything wrong with him?

It always boils down to the utd issue, give it a beak man, its starting to get very childish.

As soon as the Irish team have no matches to play all the threads on this forum turn in to anti/pro utd bs.

Id like to see you on a football pitch.

It seems to be all talk no action, the best way to settle this argument would be a game of football.

But most of you are prolly too lazy :P

Sometimes players go through bad patches in their careers, and the compounded frustration and pressure to score doesnt help.

PS-Majority of you people have no problem in saying Ian Harte is rubbish, Have you some strange inability to say that Diego Forlane is also rubbish or over-rated? United Fans...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,476 ✭✭✭Samba

I am one of the few people that disagrees with the Harte Bashing.

It is really annoying when people judge a person based on one performance, or a bad patch.

They instantly come to the conclusion that the player must be rubbish.

To me it sums up peoples short sighted mentality.

Bring on a game, is close season here in Mayo so can use our pitch if we get enough to travel down, otherwise maybe indoor in Galway sometime...

    Jaysus,

Galway, that could end up being one damn expensive game of football! :)

But i'll think about it alright, if you have enough players together and its all organised, sure why not :)

I should be able to crash in a friends in Galway.

Indoor would probably be the best idea, but it just aint as much fun as outdoor.

Any all weather/astro turf pitches in the area?

A few of us could travel down! :) anyone own a minibus? :D

Andy Townsend (hardly the best football man I concede) reckons it's because he works too hard for the team. He said if he did stay forward he might have more luck.

The person who's opinion I'd go with is Alex Ferguson's. He doesn't keep playing him for no reason. He set up a lovely goal for Giggs and will get plently himself. Ferguson has acknowledged mistakes in the transfer market before (Cryuff, Taibi) and wouldn't hesitate to drop Forlan if it was best for the team.

Of course, he has already gotten a goal. Was it the opening champions league match he had one disallowed for a mistaken offside?

It was that Hungarian side that played us at Old Trafford. It was disallowed because the linesman thought the ball went out for a goal kick when it clearly didn't cross the line. Imagine if that had to be given. This thread would not exist methinks :) .

Looks like Forlan has found his appetite again, he bagged the equaliser for Utd. against Villa Yesterday :)

Must of been a fluke, him being Sh!te and all

Absolutely it was! Ball bounced right off his head :)

Well taken goal if you ask me. Let's see if he'll start this scoring spree now he's broken his duck. Doesn't matter anyway, Manure don't have a chance this year.

Granted he did score one but he did miss an easier one.

Nice to see him properly off the mark though.

finally scored alright, nice finish but as said above he missed a bag full before it....still does this make him a great striker now!!!
Until he scores 15 -20 goals he not going to convince me

He's scored three - last I heard goals from the penalty spot do count.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,081 ✭✭✭BKtje

indeed hes on 3 in all competitions :)
I think his confidence has already risen a lot and what wasnt going in for him before, are now.

I'm hoping this is the start for a good season/career in english football for him.

I'd say solskjaer and van nistleroy are shakin in there boots , he'll still be sub for while but if he keeps it up he could get regular starts ...

Hope he learns how to put back on his jersey for next goal /match ... Thought it was funny , when he got the trainer to unravel it for him :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,476 ✭✭✭Samba

Actually Jackson he has scored more than three, that is if you want to take his reserve matches in to account.

    http://www.soccerage.com/en/13/h8417.html

He has even scored more goals

    http://www.soccernet.com/england/news/2002/0727/20020727mufcforlanfriendly.html

We could all nit pick at posting errors, but then again why bother, it's almost as bad as having a liverpool v Man u argument.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

    It's not really nitpicking though.
He has scored three in all competitions, but scoring in a reserve match isnt first team football so it doesnt count.
It's like playing for another team.

Fair play to him, crackin finish, best part was watchin him tackle with the geansai off, people are saying that he playing in 35 matches, but in truth if u add in all the sub appearances then he was doing well to have played in 12 - so a return of 3 from 12 is not that bad. Time will tell ....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,965 ✭✭✭tinofapples

What about that stike against Southampton on Saturday ????

Diego has arrived , he'll go on to finish top goalscorer now winning the Goldenboot along the way .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

Lets not lose the run of ourselves here. He has scored two good goals now, but I do not think he will become as prolific as Van Nistlerooy or Solksjaer. I maintained he was a good player throughout the drought and I still do, but he is not the poacher that either of them are. Also when he is playing, Fergie seems to play him quite deep so he does not get as many chances as the other two.

    Yeah your right Mak,

i'll drop this little issue i have with Jackson already :)

that other goal which i pasted a link to was a 1st team friendly v Chesterfield, scored a free kick from 20 yards out, thats impressive.

I still maintain that he is a great player, he just needs more time imo.

I like to see any player from any team turning into a confident and world Class Players, who imo add so much to the game when they pull out sublime skill and score breath taking goals.

    Thats football.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,093 ✭✭✭woosaysdan

forlan has finally found his feet at united!!! imo he's going to be another solskjaer (a super sub) coming off the bench to score crucial goals!!! but he reminds me of andy cole when first came to united, he also found it hard to score but look at him now he got i think 61 goals in 122 appearences at united and is doing well at blackburn

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭johnnynolegs

well done indeed twas an amazing goal went like a bullet into the top corner - and to even have the confidence to try a shot from theer when it was 1-1 pretty good - a turning point in his english career ?

    most definitey i would say..............

p.s. and im a liverpool supporter how shocking
