I have a strange grinding sound coming from my computer. Its starts when i hit the on button. Before even the bios loads. The light on my two CD drives light up. So it could be then. Its comes and goes. Its like someone drilling. Stop and starting.

Could it be a fan or the cdrom drives.

I dont wanna have to take it apart as its a pain.

    any ideas.

it may be a cable rubbing off one of youre fans, if so open up youre machine straight away and fix the problem before it gets any worse!

Could be your drives or your fans, if you unplug your drive you will know if it's them or not .If its your fans either replace them or oil them up.
And as spooky said i would fix it pretty sharply

Most likely a fan, we have dells at work that had slot 1 PIII's and nearly every one of the friggers had a fan (at right angles to the processor) that went... more than 100 pc's...

I recognise that sound! My PSU fan made that rattle
for a while then it died...

I have fixed the problem for now. I had a listen to all the fans then i took one off and re fitted it. It seems to be a vibration of someking. There is no rattle now. What should be the temp inside a ccomputer my is around 32Cis that normal.

    Thanks for the help guys.

Temp of 32 C, in the case or on the processor itself ... my processors go to about 45 C under load .. I have no idea about what temp the inside of the case is .. I'd guess that 32 C will not harm anything ..

32 that seems norm for the case
my AMD XP 1600+ stays at about 42-47 at norm use and goes up to 52-53
under heavy load.. (eg encoding divX)

best off to get a new cpu fan

the balance is probably knackered, taking it off and on can sometimes be a fix, but only a temp one

i have about 4 fans in the case. I am not sure which one it is.
Fan1 sucking air out of the case.
Fan2 CPU fan with heat sink below it.
    Fan3 on the motherboard somewhere.
    Fan4 PSU Fan

I have an Advent 3208 system. Anybody know what motherboard they use and if they are problem with them. Any programs i can use to monitor the fans to see if the are all waorking.

    Thats easy enough,
Just unplug em all apart from the psu and the chip.
If its one of them turn off the pc and unplug the cpu fan.
Turn on for about 5secs and if its not making noise its the cpu fan.
    Process of elimination tbh.
Easily done, just dont leave it on too long when the cpu fan is off
