On the reply to topic / new topic screen, click on the http:// button. Enter the text you want displayed, then enter the URL.

the answer my friend is thus :

click on the button http://, you'll find it below the BOLD, ITALICS, and UNDERLINE buttons

the first pop-up option that you enter is the word you want the link to represent, lets call it link in this example

after clicking ok, you then enter the address of the site, such as www.boards.ie

    and there you go :D

The example you were given was to shorten a URL

    http://www.boards.ie/

    to

    'link'

    Link

    Boards comprises

    Forums
    Threads
    Posts

With reference to this forum/thread/post you get more mileage out of the Shortening the further you go. Click on each of these in turn.

    Gone Shootin posted this

    POST

    In this

    THREAD

    In This

    FORUM

If you now select (in Internet Explorer) View Menu>Source you can view the html that the boards software generates and you will see that the longest URL is for a POST and the shorter URL brings you to a FORUM which leaves you with a bit of tunneling to do to find the posts.

A really nice answer to a question set by a newbie would take them to a POST that answers their specific question but sometimes a member will want you to get a handle on the topics in a Forum or else to look at all the points in a relevant thread....it depends on context, time and how nicely you ask.

The vB code for it is as follows

    {url=www.theurlyouwanttolink.com}The piece of text u want displayed {/url}

Just replace the curly brackets ({ & }) with square ones ([ &])
