    <ME TAKES="A DEEP BREATH">
    In hacker lingo, "l33t" means "Elite".
    Implying that you know a lot about various computer systems, their security and how to gain unauthorised access to them.
    ("0wn1ng y0uR b0><" means gaining root privilages on your system)

    This so-called "l33t-speak" has been scoffed at by 0ld-sk00l hackers as being the language of script-kiddies and thus most serious hackers have rejected it.

    I don't consider myself to be "l33t" as then I would be admiting my "script-kiddyness", also due to the fact that I haven't "0wn3d" anyones "b0x".
    Although I sometimes like to take the p1ss with l33t-$p3@k, I do it for fun, not to impress.

    "l33tsp34k" has pretty much become part and parcel of IRC communication now, and even real-life communication for net-heads; it's practically a seperate dialect of English. I give it 2 years before a US college starts running courses in it smile.gif

    When spoken, l33tsp34k is quite different to normal speech... The word "l33t" is pronounced "leet", not "elite", for example. Words like "pe0n", "llama", "r0x0r", "fux0red", "ha><0r" and "sux0r" are also commonly found in the speech pattern of those fluent in l33tsp34k, and the term "0wn" is pretty important too. Describing something as "t00 d4mn l33t" is common; telling a pe0n to "get sum skillz" is a regularly used insult.

    It's gone beyond being script kiddie territory at this stage and is just another contribution to English vocabulary. Whether this is a sad and nerdy thing or not, is open to question... smile.gif

    Ja,
    Rob (taking the ****.... mostly.)
