hmm I didn't see that.. its unusual though. I lived on Cape Clear 1995 - 1997 and did a load of fishing - there were no anglers catching tuna back then.

Killer Whales are nothing new in Ireland, there were amazing scenes in Belmullet a few years back when several decided to take up residence in the channel outside the village and they are fairly common sightings around the coast, in fact there are more whales in Irish waters than is commonly appreciated. Ask any of the whale watching ventures eg. Carrigaholt in Clare. As for great white sharks in Kinsale, too much guinness with the oysters methinks! These are a predominantly cold water species so it would be doubly surprising to find it showing up in the summer... perhaps it was a large Porbeagle? Not disimiliar in general outline and shape, and definitely a lot more common :-)

I don't think he was commenting on the presence of killer whales in Irish waters, but on the family of killer whales that swam up the river Lee, right into the city center last year. That was very bizarre if you're familiar with Cork Harbour.

I've never associated great white sharks with cold water... I know they're found on both coasts of the USA, in temperate waters... which is exactly what we have off West Cork, warmed by the North Atlantic Drift. Thats where I'd expect to find unusual fish. As for the suggestion that it might have been a porbeagle.. that sounds likely but I'd be interested in finding out for sure. LastIrishMonkey was it in the newspaper or something?
