Rascist comments here...

Recently there have been a bunch of racist outbursts on this board. Some general in nature and some specifically aimed at particular people.

    None of them are acceptible.

In this regard people often fall back to the "he started it" approach. Thats not good enough. We're all adults here (at least we'd like to think so) so we should be mature enough to take other routes then to hit back with equally unacceptible and inflamatory responses.

I've reviewed all the posts here and its clear that passions were inflamed. Let me explain this:

I dont care how inflamed passions were if I see the sort of posts that were going on I will put on my shít kicking boots and kick some shít.

Racial euphemisms are not welcome here. Full stop.

Personally targetted racial slurs of the type "pasta munching cretin" are completely unacceptible, provoked or otherwise.

Several people have been warned from this and I'm publically warning Hairy Homer for phrases such as the aforementioned "pasta munching cretin" for which an apology would be the proper course of action.

This is the final warning to EVERYONE. Rascism is unacceptible. Period. Full stop.

"He said, she said, they started it" just doesnt excuse whats been going on on that thread. Turnip and Homer should be ashamed of themselves for completely innappropriate behaviour.
Blade and Corinthian, you should know better then to stoop to that level, regardless of provocation.

    DeVore.

    Hairy Homer Says:

he's very sorry for calling The Corinthian a 'pasta munching cretin'. He acknowledges that he shouldn't have said that, especially in a separate thread, and even though his grandfather had been personally insulted. He offers his personal apologies.

He thought that The Corinthian was Blade (easy mistake to make, eh De Vore?) whom he still considers on the evidence of his posts to be a prat.

He is happy to state for the record that he considers the fact that Blade is also Italian to be a coincidence not a symbiosis.

He says his inference that Italian tanks retreated a lot is based on the fact that they did (frequently) in North and East Africa during WWII but that is no intended slur on the individual tank crews, least of all Corinthian's grandfather. (Unless of course Corinthian's grandfather was called Marshall Graziani in which case he deserves all the stick he gets for failing to make a 4:1 superiority in troops, 10:1 superiority in artillery pieces and 6:1 superiority in tanks count against his British rivals in Egypt.)

He still doesn't like people who espouse the cause of colonialism, especially people from Johnny-come-lately economies like Ireland and thinks such people should look at Italy's disastrous experience in trying to catch up with its European rivals as a relatively new country in the 19th century as a salutary lesson in not biting off more than you can chew.

He likes Italy, (mostly) Italians (mostly) and loves pasta and pizza.

And he won't be around here for much more anyway.

Hmm, I admit that I responded to Blade's interesting "savage jungle bunnies" comment in a deliberately OTT way however it was calculated to expose his hypocrisy and the slack board moderation which seems to allow these kind of comments to be posted regularly.

And now I apologise for any offence caused.

For the record, my bad experiences of Italian (and Greek) people were confined to a small minority and most people were exceptionally civil.

Hairy Homer got kicked out on his ass (and others got warnings and talking to's) hence the new account. Dont blame him for that.
The condition on the "apology" are annoying but to apologise at all given the heat of the debate is something. Being first to do so is also commendable.

I'm glad to see Turnip retract his statements and I'd ask that others who let themselves down redeem themselves as well. (God I sound like my old school master ffs, look what you've done to me!).

The arguments for and against colonisism, war and politically complex issues are NOT best expressed in the language of "Jungle bunnies" and "whores".

Also, I'd ask people not to pour petrol on this thread as I'm not in the mood for playing Solomon again :) (yes that means you too Shinji. Sleeping dogs etc...)

    DeV.

    The Corinthian Says:

He has no interest in offending anyone’s family, but simply reacted to a combination of racist stereotyping and an offence to his own family who fought, and in some cases died, in north and east Africa in the thirties and forties. All he saw was someone attacking in a derisory manner his ancestors without having even posted to the thread at that stage. He subsequently responded in kind.

Any subsequent reference to Hairy Homer’s mother was uncalled for and probably more accurately reflected the physical reaction he would have taken had they been face to face. As such he apologises unreservedly to Hairy Homer’s mother for any and all offence. No malice or ill will was meant and any inference upon her character is retracted unreservedly.

However, he has never been fond of backhanded apologies that have enough qualifications to become chair of martyrdom in Oxford. Nor is he interested in hearing historical rhetoric used as a justification. Nonetheless, he’s had years of having to deal with racial stereotypes being assumed of him (some of which, he’ll admit aren’t all that bad either), so he’s kind of sick of it all and would just like to forget about it at this stage.

I do think Turnip was a bit of a twat coming out with what he did and then digging himself deeper as the discussion went along, but am satisfied that he’s is not such a bad guy after all and would probably buy him a drink to prove it at the next boards booze-up.

I am also cancelling the contract on his head.

I didn't qualify my apology, Corinthian. I apologised (through a proxy) without conditions for calling you a 'pasta-munching etc etc' Happy to restate it.
    Sorry.
    Shouldn't have said it.
    Won't happen again.

I didn't apologise for insulting your grandfather because I didn't insult your grandfather.

I won't apologise for arguing the case against colonialism and those who think that 'ignorant savages' are better off with it than without. And if one of those most vehemently arguing the toss proclaims himself to be Italian, I will point out the irony that Italy's experience with empire building was an utter disaster.

I will try to do so without recourse to stereotypical cheap shots.

You may not agree. Fine. Argue back without bringing my mother into it.

And since you asked, my grandfather died on service in WWII. On the other side to yours, I'm afraid.

You insulted those members of my family who fought in the war with an interference of blanket cowardice on the part of the Italian soldier in WWII. I’m certainly not going to argue history here with you. After all, history has nothing to do with this.

Offensive comments about “tanks having four reverse gears” are not historical. They are a blanket accusation of cowardice over any Italian who fought; be they brave or not, solder or general, victor or vanquished. Glib statements like that cannot be dressed up as history, fact or anything other than the manifestation of a nasty little prejudice.

My involvement in this nasty little affair began with your initial stereotypical cheap shot.

And you hit back with direct comments about his grandfather and later his mother.

HH has specifically identified that he meant no disrespect to your grandfather
...his inference that Italian tanks retreated a lot is based on the fact that they did (frequently) in North and East Africa during WWII but that is no intended slur on the individual tank crews, least of all Corinthian's grandfather.

Now, you can argue the toss on the historical accuracy of the frequency of Allied retreats in the North of Africa but I dont see this as personal racial slurs.

In return Cor, you apologised to HH's mother.

Now, I've had a good deal of my time and patience taken up with this and I want the matter dropped or taken to PM.
Blade wakes up late due to his job and I'll point this thread at him when he does.

Beyond that I'm NOT interested in teasing out the "he said she said" elements of this sorry squabble or I'll eradicate all sources of this waste of my time.

    DeV.

    Fair enough so.

I hereby formally resign from moderating this board.

I have no regrets about editting a thread that intimated threats against other users and the locking of the original thread was enough in my opinion. If the same thing happened I'd handle it exactly the same way.

But I'm not, as obviously my style of moderatorship is not compatible with the way DeVore wants this board moderated.

    No hard feelings. :)

I'd like to apologise for my use of the term 'jungle bunnies' as it may have offended some of our African users and quite obviously seems to have upset some other users too. This in fact was not directed to all Africans, only to those savages who commit such atrocities as described in previous posts. I make no apology however for the use of the words ' uneducated savages ' because I feel that anyone who thinks they can cure their AIDS by raping a small child is quite frankly an ' uneducated savage '. I apologise however for the use in which I used these words which may have made it look like I meant that all Africans were, which of course they're not.

Turnip: You came into a very serious topic about rapists and murderers and started comparing these people to Italians and Greeks who chatted up your G/F. I found this so amusing that I decided to wind you up about your G/F, I thought the obvious sarcasm and even the ;) thrown in might have given you a clue that it was only a wind up but obviously yourself and Hairy Homer didn't cop it. If I was really upset about your comments on Italians you would have known about it, I know myself what Italians are like and I even told you that if there was anarchy there it would be a seriously dangerous place for women. I don't see a problem with generalizations about different cultures once they're not used as a direct personal insult.

However what I do have a problem with is when things get personal like when Hairy Homer made his first contribution to the thread. His remark was both racist and personal and he has refused to apologise to me for it. He also started going on about the war in order to divert the thread and cause an imminent flame war which I did not get involved with. I lost many uncles in the war and those were brave men, unlike Hairy Homer himself who hides behind a computer screen to throw personal insults at people. Perhaps he might grow the balls to say these things to my face someday, we'll see then who has 4 reverse gears. He might also want to note that it was the Romans who formed the base of civilization of the entire western world as we know it, money, roads, toga parties etc. It wasn't yesterday but neither was the war he refers too. With an attitude like his it's little wonder why he has problems getting passed bouncers.

Right. After delicate behind the scenes discussion I have decided to withdraw my resignation. Also I'd like to recommend that DeVore be sent to the Middle East to sort out stuff.

So, I'm back moderating this board. Pheer.

Personal attacks on other posters will NOT be tolerated and I will edit/delete/move posts that contain them.

Also I note that the personal arguments are continuing in this thread despite Dev's post so I am locking it soley for that reason.

I'll say it again: Attack the arguments, not the person or their nationality. If you don't I may well edit your post to make you look stupid as a punishment. And you don't agree with this policy then you can:

    A: Post to Admin complaining.
B: Bite my shiny metal ass.
